The only thing the 2014 movie changed was say he's something older than the dinosaurs and even then he might still be related to them like a distant cousin that existed before them.
I think that a mutant iguana or "creation" by some higher being is an insult to the series.
Godzilla 2014 kept him a "natural mystery" like the original. Theories were made, but cannot be 100% proven.
