A theoretical "Nikkatsu DVD Pack"

Post by H-Man »

Okay, we know that several years back, Media Blasters released the Toho Pack. It contained one kaiju film (Varan the Unbelievable), one Toho space opera (The Mysterians), and one human monster/Mutant film (Matango).

Sony/Tri-Star also released their Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection, which followed a similar format: one kaiju film (Mothra), one Toho space opera (Battle in Outer Space), and one Mutant film (H-Man).

Moreover, the "When Horror Came to Shochiku" collection also did something along the same lines: one kaiju film (X From Outer Space), one alien invasion-esque movie (Goke, the Body Snatcher from Hell), and one human monster/ghost movie (Living Skeleton). (OBS: Genocide is something of an anomaly)

If one wanted to do something similar with Nikkatsu Studios, how could it go? The kaiju film would most likely be (Gappa, the Triphibian Monster). What about the space opera and the human monster films? Any ideas?

The only other Nikkatsu movies I've ever heard of besides Gappa are yakuza flicks like Branded to Kill, which doesn't much fit the science fiction theme.

I'd really like to see MGM do a Sony-like release of the three Toho films that they have; i.e., Japanese version/American version combinations of The Human Vapor, The Last War and Gorath in one package. I'd buy that in an instant!

They did most of the Roman Porno in the 70s, but that's not what we're talking about here.

I think most of their genre films come from their subsidiary Sushi Typhoon, like ALIENS VS NINJA and TOKYO GORE POLICE.

Unless they decide to include some godawful Sushi Typhoon movies, I can't really see this working. I imagine they've done some other efforts that could be considered apart of the sci-fi/fantasy genre, but probably nothing that would stand much of a chance getting released here.

Now what WOULD be great is a set of Toei's various Tokusatsu film efforts. We have decent releases for The Green Slime, Message from Space, Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds (Though that appears to be OOP) and Wolf Guy, but there are still plenty of other efforts that could use a nice home video release like The Final War, The Magic Serpent, Ogon Bat and the various theatrical superhero films from the 50s and early 60s. Unlikely to happen, but one could dream.
