I'm fairly certain it's not true and the resemblance is more just due to being made by the same creators making a very similar suit twice, but this seems very pervasive of a rumor.
The body does look strikingly similar.

As far as I know it's just a rumor. I doubt it's true.

Considering how poorly the suits were managed at Toho, I doubt the Snowman suit survived for seven years intact.

Not to mention an additional five years, during which time it was loaned to TPC and did water tank duty in King Kong Escapes.

Very true. I wasn't keen to think it true and chalked it up more to perhaps the suit teams reusing old plans and designs, and what looked good in Black and White ended up looking like roadkill in Color.

Yes, but the one on here is the American version.
You want a review:
Japanese version is better imo. A lot is cut from the Japanese version that adds to both Godzilla and Kong's respective stories. Examples being tension of Godzilla re-appearing. A lot of context for Kong's expedition is cut out, which removes the comedy of the film. Just watch it yourself.

The newscaster scenes in the US version really bring the momentum of the film to a screeching halt whenever one pops up. The Japanese version flows so much better.

I did - last night, thanks to Terasawa linking me to it on the Internet Archive - and you're right, it's much better!

I did, however, notice some scenes are still missing, but only a few. There's a small gap between the scene of Kong's emergence from the mountain on Faro Island and the scene back in the native village, the scene where Chikiro and his mother are fleeing from the Oodako and the scene where Kong drops to the ground after drinking the last two jugs of berry juice before he falls asleep. The last two, fortunately, I could fill in, having already seen the American version (where they are included). Also, some parts of the film were darker in tone than others.

But, all in all, an excellent film! One wonders what King Kong Meets Frankenstein would've been like, though, if it had been made...

I went to the Faroe Islands a few years back. No giant apes though.

It's not the giant apes you need to worry about. It's the giant octopus.

I haven't seen the Japanese version either.
I've got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.

Then expect something that's fiercer, more cruel, and deadly than anything that's walked the Earth.

I'm a little more worried about lizards. Big, ugly, nasty, large lizards.

If I saw Oodako irl, I’d commit seppuku.

The "controversy" seems mostly constrained to Twitter (surprise, surprise). One Discord group I'm part of briefly discussed it but the mods threw a fit and stopped the conversation. Basically we all knew it was making a mountain out of a very minuscule molehill.

What was the controversy? I haven't read G-Fan since 2001.

There's some discussion about it on page 12 of the Trolling Godzilla Fans thread:

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
