Godzilla's Revenge G-MAN HD Reconstruction Now Available

Post by G-MAN »

So after working on my restoration of Godzilla vs the Thing, I was going to work on Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster. Though I was having some issues with that one with my computer. So I decided to move onto Godzilla's Revenge as it was much less of intensive edit as Ghidrah was. Love the edit but man were the U.S. editors tweaking quite a bit with that film.

So here is the breakdown.
*Main video source being used is the criterion bluray disc. For a second I thought I might have to use another one as I noticed at least once there was a frame that had a little at the bottom of the frame chopped off. But it appears to be present on the R2 source used for the Classic Media release as well.
*Titles and Credits were taken from the classic media DVD. Both were deinterlaced, upscaled, given a higher bitrate, and had a pass through to remove as much macro blocking or pixealtion that would be present.
*Audio source was the Classic Media DVD. Might check out the simitar disc in the future and see if it offers any improvements. But I figured it would be nice to get this one out sooner rather than later.
*Template was of course the Classic Media release.

This release is pretty much done I just need to make sure there are no issues with it being run through tsMuxer for fans like myself who want to burn it to bluray. As this along with my other restoration are MKV's that are blu-ray compatible.

I didn't include it on the Godzilla vs the Thing restoration, but I might include the commentaries from the Classic Media relwases as a bonus track as I personally love them and think they should be an option for fans. Especially seeing as we seemingly aren't getting any new commentaries going forward for these films if Criterion didn't want to bother with any new ones.

But again this restoration is almost complete and I will update the post when it's been uploaded and ready for sharing. If you are interested feel free to pm me and I'll send the link when it's uploaded.

*Edit
Now uploaded and ready for fellow fans to check it out.

Hello there,

New to the TK forums and was wondering if I could get those 3 links to your reconstructions PM'd to me if you wouldn't mind sharing them. Been a huge Godzilla fan for 25 years and absolutely adore Red Menace's reconstructions. I hear yours are just as good! Anyway, hoping you can help a fellow G fan out. Thanks.

G-MAN, what source did you use for the end titles? The Classic Media disc uses the cropped MonstersHD master for the end title, while the non-anamorphic Simitar disc uses a fully-uncropped image. Naturally, the CM disc will have higher resolution, but I'm not sure if you'd be able to merge the two images together to get the best of both worlds.

Here's a comparisson:

Cropped MonstersHD/Classic Media:

Simitar:

I used the second release that Classic Media did. This might be something I look at in the future as a version 1.5 or something as it wouldn't be that intensive of a change essentially since it's literally the last shot.

I only used what I had on hand as I didn't want to download any subpar rips you might find on certain sites. But I might look into that or the original Classic Media disc has a better quality end credits that was just converted to 4:3. Which is the main reason I never bothered with those discs as they were pan and scan.

I will look into getting good copies of both discs and see what can be improved and used. My only issue with combining those two sources is the second release is of a much higher quality. And while I believe the Simitar release of Revenge was one of the nicer looking ones. I do intend to see what can be done. While not sacrificing the visual quality of the reconstruction. As some of those simitar discs have some really bad compression and aliasing issues. Especially on modern televisions. But again in very curious to see what can be done as I've had experience messing with them before. As I tried salvaging the frontier missile sequence from the simitar release but was never fully happy with it.

I also intend to look at the discs for when I eventually get to doing my own Monster Zero reconstruction. Thank you for sharing and pointing this out as I'm always open to suggestions for these.
