I'm going to be finishing off RE4 remake tonight. Its a good game but I still prefer RE2 over this.

It killed my enjoyment of the game so fast that I abandoned it in favor of another Last of Us 2 playthrough. That being said, I do want to finish RE4 so tell me, is it true that Ashley starts holding her own better later in the game? Because that will make me a lot more keen on picking it up again.

On another note, I was shocked by how hard this game is. Like, it is WAY fucking harder than any of the other RE titles I've played (RE2 remake, RE3 remake, RE7 and RE8). I'm currently stuck on the Mendes boss fight, and have already died to him more than any other boss in the series. And to be clear, I actually like the challenge, except when the challenge involves saving a useless NPC every five seconds.
As the game goes on Ashley gets better at following you overall....that being said, I very rarely had many problems in my so far 3, going on 4 playthroughs of the game so far. Which parts are giving you trouble? I'd love to help.

Professional in this game is unbelievably hard. By the way, you can dodge most of Mendez's attacks decently well by just running far from him. Phase 2 is harder but still manageable.

On another note, this is by far my favorite RE game, I absolutely love it, I'm having so much fun with it and Mercenaries! Here's looking forward to Separate Ways

I think both games are perfect, but it really comes down to preference. As much as I like RE4, I did really like the "urban enviornment" of both RE2+3. I liked seeing a police station, and then a city, a mundane place, transformed into a horror show. The locations of 2+3 are very unique in turning late 90s cities into playable videogames. Sort of a rarity now. The rotting villages and dark castles, in RE4 are very tropic and it loses some of its identity there despite it being stellar. Although the remake does a fantastic job at updating everything, minus a few moments, RE4 doesn't feel as "lived in" (I do really like that little house that Leon enters and gets infected with the plagas though).

This playthrough though made me really love the Island. I love the weird mix of being terrorism+bioweapons. It didn't occur to me until this time around, but I like how the island plays into RE's tropes with it's own unique setting. It's an island, but also effectively the LAB. I love Re4's progression of mystery, starting with more fantastical villagers and cultists, and ending on bio-terrorists/pirates.

Ashley starts out obnoxious, screaming and constantly fearful (but what person other than our action-orinented hero wouldn't be?) though over time she becomes much better and develops her own resolve. FYI, the entire game isn't an escort mission the instant you encounter her, she'll weave in and out of the story. There's sections that use her in puzzles, and parts where you have to protect her, but it isn't so difficult, and was actually made easier/more reasonable than RE4 Original. Speaking of RE4 original, Ashley there was atrocious. Much more whiny, and sexualized in the most braindead way possible. Here they sort of flesh Ashley and Leon's relationship in a much more endearing and less gawky way.
On another note, I was shocked by how hard this game is. Like, it is WAY fucking harder than any of the other RE titles I've played (RE2 remake, RE3 remake, RE7 and RE8). My first playthrough went pretty bad, and it was difficult. I think though part of that is recognizing that RE4 is the halfway point between survival horror and action. It's still a survival horror game, but the game has no problem with you just shooting away and doesn't reward hesitation/delicacy. After playing the Dead Space remake, I had to get used to not worrying about conserving ammo, and get comfortable with just shooting away to my hearts content. It really has no issue throwing HORDES of seemingly never ending enemies at you, and as long as you don't horribly mess up, usually you'll get back equivalent to the resources you shot out.

Mendez was a little difficult for me on my first playthrough, but not anything infuriating. Make sure you're using the ladders to the left and right. The entire first part of the fight is just going up, getting some shots in, then going down when he comes up. Pretty simple. Make sure you've got your knife equipped as well.

Started playing the OG RE4, now I'm at the island. I gotta say, this game is fantastic. Like hot damn, not only is Ada Wong my kryptonite but it's pretty awesome to come across a game where the level design is this engaging and I haven't come across an enemy type I found annoying. The ballistics has barely given me any trouble, instructing Ashley to stay or follow is much easier than say, the survivors in Dead Rising. And knowing she shares the same VA as Sandy Cheeks is pretty funny. Plus, Rino Romano as Luis? Hell yeah.

So I'm really loving OG RE4, probably my favorite thus far besides RE1 remake. I played the remakes of 2 & 3 but felt inclined to try out the original RE4 because I had a feeling it didn't need to be remade, from the legends I've heard

RE4 definitely didn't have to be remade yet. I would have preferred a remake of Code Veronica over RE4 first. Hopefully Capcom does that next after RE9 because I feel like that game doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Agreed, and I especially feel like the kickass attitude and humor of classic RE4 can't quite be recaptured. I beat Mercenaries and am onto Separate Ways, it's a blast! Ada's one-liner after defeating Krauser might be the greatest thing I've ever heard. I do want to check out Code Veronica, I think it's also on the playstation store? I've heard mixed things about CV but I want to play it to see where Claire's story goes.

Code Veronica should be on Playstation. I'm not sure if its stuck on PS3 or if it's part of the PS2 Classics lineup. I've played most of Code Veronica. I got it day one when it launched on Dreamcast back in 2000 and made it all the way to Antartica but screwed myself on ammo so I never finished it. I do have the Xbox 360 version that came out, so I'll probably play through it that way. It sucks that it doesn't get the proper respect it deserves, because it actuality it is the true RE3 but because Capcom had a deal with Sony at the time to put all numbered entries on Playstation it came off as the side game and not the true sequel it is.

Code Veronica has officially been kicking my ass, no sugar coating it. I made it so far.....only to get stuck in the penultimate boss fight with Chris against Alexia during the countdown. I guess this is why he takes bouldering punching steroids in the future.

Im hoping after Death Island that they're bringing Jill back, as she is apparently stuck as a 30-something year old and not a 50-60 year old like the rest of the main characters

As a side note, I recently beat Shadows of Rose, and I have to say I loved it! It was really fun and I liked that it recontextualized the original ending into something happier

Not really the only rumor is that Chris will be the main playable character. I've also heard rumblings that it'll set up the events of the Netflix live action show that came out last year, but with how poorly that was received it's possible that Capcom may reconsider this strategy.

We'll most likely get news on RE9 next year with a release date of late next year or early 2025, that seems to be Capcom's release schedule for these games. I'm guessing we'll get news on the RE4 DLC at the next Playstation Event which will most likely be next month.

I know this question regards the movies instead of the games, but does anyone know why Paul WS Anderson decided to create the character of Alice instead of bringing in actual characters from the game? Did his wife not find Jill Valentine interesting enough?

Finished the new Separate Ways last night (on hardcore-yeesh) and it was absolutely awesome. Super fun and a great pairing with the main game. The music was absolutely incredible, and the combat encounters and exploration was very concise, tense, and fun. Ada's VA did a better job this time around, and the writing overall was solid. The Mercenaries' update is also lots of fun. And all this for $10? What a steal

I'm assuming we'll get a RE9 announcement next year in May/June for the Playstation State of Play with a release date of late 2024 or early 2025. Then hopefully after RE9 we get a Code Veronica remake, but all signs are pointing to a RE5 remake first. I'm wondering if Capcom will skip a remake of RE6 or what? I'm assuming we'll get a remake of RE0 and probably another remake of the RE down the line too.
