The re-release of James Cameron's Avatar in China made the movie the highest grossing film of all time once again, taking back its throne from Avengers: Endgame.

Re: General movies/Hollywood thread.
Since I'm part of those early screening film groups, I've been asked to participate in seeing a film, with the only description being
"The movie has not yet been rated but is believed to be either ‘PG-13’ or ‘R’ due to strong language and some violence/gore. The studio cannot, of course, guarantee the rating that the film will ultimately receive. "
I know that could be anything but I can't for the life of me think of any upcoming films on my radar that this would fall under.

Re: General movies/Hollywood thread.
Rob Zombie confirmed to direct a Munsters reboot
I know his last few movies have been, for lack of a better word, not very good (I liked House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, but 31, his Halloween remakes and 3 From Hell left a LOT to be desired, hell, 3FH shouldn't have even happened), but I'd like to see RZ step out of his usual edgy fare for a change. People are naturally worried that he'll make an R-rated adaptation of a kid's show, but he's a huge fan of the series and Eli Roth did make a family-friendly film recently, so who's to say RZ couldn't do the same?
Great choice of music for The Devil's Rejects' ending BTW, Kingsman: the Secret Service also used that song for the awesome church scene.

Anybody else morning the death of IMAX 3D? Tried to see GvK in that format here in Texas and not a single IMAX 3D screening in the whole state so I had to settle for Real D 3D. Really frustrated after the Instagram post Adam did saying how amazing the IMAX 3D looked and really missing seeing films in that format.

Still alive and well (well, in stasis at least) in my area of NY. I wish it was just normal IMAX and not 3D though.

Another major acquisition happened today.
Look on the bright side, at least it wasn't Disney buying them out.

Re: General movies/Hollywood thread.
Unsure if this is the right place.....but does anyone miss the hell out of the days where 'normal' films were about 90 minutes, action/blockbusters often hovered into the 100-120 minute range...and only the biggest of films even dared to creep towards 150 minutes?
I feel like Titanic, then the Lord of the Rings Trilogy sort of set an unofficial new standard...that if you are making a big "blockbuster" or want to create something to be perceived as "Epic" then it needs to be in the 2.5 hour range of more.
And sadly...I feel like the climate of the industry got so used to that type of film existing(and succeeding)....that we reached a place where a lot of 2.5 hour movies were coming out that were just 2 hour movies in disguise.
For example....look at some classic family films of late 80s and into the 90s. The Land Before Time, 69 minutes. The Lion King...the MOST SUCCESSFUL 2D animated film of all time, 88 minutes. Toy Story, 81 minutes. The Nightmare Before Christmas, 76 minutes.
Flashforward...compare the average runtime of the first 10 Pixar films to the last 10. Films like Incredibles 2 are nearly 2 hours. I was in the theater with my girlfriend...and kids were getting squirmy and restless. These are kids films, or films primarily meant for younger viewers...who don't have long attention spans.
And in today's ADHD age...the average person has an even shorter attention span...yet it feels like movies are getting longer and longer.
In so many cases when I find myself with friends or family debating a movie to watch...one of the biggest ways people take a film out of contention is to say "Gosh, that movie is great but it is just so long"
I love it when the Quiet Place films are in the 90 minute range and succeed so much. I loved seeing Sonic be so successful at like 99 minutes. Have of the reason I loved Underwater was because it was a lean, mean 90-ish minute movie that was very fast paced. I love it every time a great under 100 minute movie succeeds.
Compare the two Space Jam movies. Both are fairly shallow and commercial movies, yet the first is a focused 88 minutes. The 2nd? 115 minutes. A half an hour of extra "fluff" can be the difference between "This is fun, harmless, easy viewing" and "This is a grueling experience"
The original probably wouldn't have resonated with as many 90s kids as it did if it were a bloated 2 hour mess of a movie.
Look at the original Star Wars trilogy. Each of the originals are 2 hours or just a little more. I think the prequels average more in the 135-140 minute range. I think Episode 7-9 probably average closer to the 145 minute mark. Making them longer did not do 7-9 any favors. The original film being just at 120 minutes didn't stop it from being absolutely iconic.
Phase 1 of the MCU were all right about 2 hours, barely going over with the credits. Come Phase 3 and it feels like 135 minutes is closer to the average.
I would just love to see a return to the days where a big, impactful blockbuster could still be done in under 2 hours. I think films are not being made as effectively any more. You used to get perfect, iconic classics that didn't feel like they were missing ANYTHING...and they were very short and effective.
Now you sometimes get these movies that feel like they take half your day...and you come away expecting more. Not more screen-time or real estate, but more quality, more efficiency, more bang for your buck. I see the padding EVERYWHERE in modern genre films.

Re: General movies/Hollywood thread.
I don't really care about the length of modern films (because I have little interest in them no matter their runtime), but yes, I prefer movies in the 90-minute range. Obviously certain stories demand longer run times, and some of my all-time favorite films are more than 2.5 hours long (The Best Years of Our Lives; Seven Samurai; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), but I'd argue that length has little to do with the effectiveness of any given movie. Obviously as something as heavy and important as Schindler's List needs an extended runtime, but so many movies can be fully developed in under an hour and a half if the filmmakers are capable enough.
I think most of the movies I watch, however, are shorter than 90 minutes. I watch a lot of films from the '30s through the '50s that aren't even 75 minutes, but these are often as well-paced and structured (if not more so) than later movies that exceed two hours.

Re: General movies/Hollywood thread.
Nobody needs a three hour Avengers movie.
We're not likely to see another Seven Samurai or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly anytime soon because movies that "E P I C" are only made if the protagonists are wearing spandex or space clothes.
All the "real" cinema is being made at low price points and usually with a pretty brisk run-time.
Currently, movies are available on streaming services "for free," not to mention all the "peak" TV (a term I despise because most TV shows are trash, but people are easily manipulated into thinking they're quality, but I digress) to compete with. An easy trick by the studios to differentiate is to make the runtimes 2+ hours so that the people slinging 12 dollars for a movie ticket and 100$ for popcorn feel like they're getting enough content for their money at the theater. This is where I agree with Marty about the entertainment industry as whole having too much of a fascination with "content." Kurosawa and Leone were not concerned with cramming 3+ hours of content into a mass media release so their studio could make a billion dollar gross global profit, they let the story dictate the amount of movie in the final product. But Kurosawa and Leone were in charge of their films and treated them as art, not IP commercials for 110 other interconnected massive IP commercials. They didn't care about merchandise, or returns on a billion dollar purchase of an existing sprawling toy commercial franchise.
I know I'm oversimplifying things, but Disney is a dead on example of modern Hollywood being so over bloated with commercialism it makes even my black capitalist heart sick.

I think there's enough strength in the game's visual design to support a film regardless of whether or not the story is fully released.Gigantis wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 2:09 am Studio71 is making a film adaptation of the indie game, Poppy Playtime.. even though the games' second chapter hasn't even come out yet, and the first chapter only came out last October

Disney's Communications Chief, Geoff Morrell, is out. After 3 months in the gig. A lot of it is being put on how the Florida situation was handled.
That's a win.

Oh fucking great, first the NFT’s now this, as time goes on I gently dislike this game and the developers more and more, it really seems that they don’t give a shit about their product and just want the money with their kid animations at Zanimations and enchantedmob, you can’t deny they are milking it at all it’s worthGigantis wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 2:09 am Studio71 is making a film adaptation of the indie game, Poppy Playtime.. even though the games' second chapter hasn't even come out yet, and the first chapter only came out last October

Added in 1 minute 41 seconds:
I’m not saying I dislike the game from the start when it was shown it’s had a promise and Great potential until they squander it with scummy tactics
