Random Musings and Factoids Thread

Post by Tyrant_Lizard_King »

Just a thread for random thoughts, facts, ideas, and observations.

Just watched an episode of Perry Mason with special guest stars Richard Jaeckel (Latitude Zero) and Rhodes Reason (King Kong Escapes). King Kong stars Robert Armstrong and Fay Wray have also guest starred in episodes.

Shelley Sweeny is an actress/model in Japan that has appeared in four Godzilla films, across the Heisei and Millennium eras.

She doesn't do much, but I just think this is interesting.

Fay Wray also played Burr's wife in the movie Crime of Passion.

Including Burr's two Godzilla movies, eight tokusatsu films were Americanized by incorporating new material of Hollywood performers. Actors from seven of those movies also appeared in episodes of Perry Mason with Burr: Morris Ankrum (from Half Human; he was in 22 episodes), Myron Healy (Varan), Harry Holcombe (KKvG), Brian Donlevy (Gammera the Invincible), Gigi Perreau (High Seas Hijack), and Warren Kemmerling (Godzilla 1985). James Hong, who dubbed roughly half of all male voices in KotM, appeared on-screen on Perry Mason as well. Incidentally, Tidal Wave is the only one of these movies which doesn't apparently qualify.

Tohl Narita apparently created monster and alien designs for Earth Defense Girl Iko-chan, one of the first major works of Minoru Kawasaki, the director of Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit and Monster Seafood Wars.

Yeah Ankrum is one of the various rotating judges. He was also in The Giant Claw of course.

Kyle Chandler has been in two Godzilla and Kong movies. That's gotta be some kinda record, right? Raymond Burr has been in two Godzilla films, other than that idk off the top of my head.

Off the top of my head, Yoshifumi Tajima and Ikio Sawamura both beat Chandler out by having appeared in both Toho Kong films and numerous Godzilla entries.

Ah! In that case, yes, I suspect you're right about Chandler.

Regarding records, Kenji Sahara still has the record for most Godzilla series roles (13). He also appeared in 11 more Toho genre films, at least a couple of Toho war movies, and several dozen episodes of Tsuburaya Productions shows (including many made during the period when Tsuburaya was a Toho subsidiary).

However, Sahara didn't receive on-screen credit for his extra work in Godzilla ('54), so he shares the record for most *credited* Godzilla roles with Haruo Nakajima and Koichi Ueda, who appeared in 12 consecutive Godzilla films from 1989 to 2004 (only his voice is heard in G2K, but at least his name's in the credits).

Rik Thomas deserves honorable mention: He dubbed at least 11 Godzilla movies (possibly 12 -- G2K is still a question mark because the Hong Kong dub has never turned up on video) without once receiving on-screen credit.

These actor records are scratching a very particular part of my brain, I love it.
I was just gonna raise the point about Ueda but couldn't remember his name, googled him and there it was. I didn't know he had a voice cameo in G2K!
Edit: It's nice to put a name to the voice. Rik Thomas apparently voiced Galvatron in the Headmasters Transformers dub which is another reason I have to seek that out.

Sometimes I think about how the only significant nudity we got in a Godzilla movie was Yuki's b*tt :(

The most significant nudity comes from the kaiju. Ask yourself, have you ever seen a kaiju wearing clothes?
I've got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.

Then expect something that's fiercer, more cruel, and deadly than anything that's walked the Earth.

And answer yourself, there was that time Mechagodzilla cosplayed as a naked Godzilla.

A few random in-universe thoughts and realizations I've had about the Showa series:

- As survivors of Godzilla's attack in 1954, I wonder what people like Emiko, Ogata, Dr. Yamane, and Steve thought as over the years, the destroyer of Tokyo began to become known as a savior of mankind and defender of the world, beloved by children and even having toys made of him. Sure, it's a different Godzilla, but I'm sure anyone who survived the '54 attacks wouldn't care.

- As Godzilla burns Tokyo to the ground, leaving a path of untold death and destruction in his wake, there is concurrently a prophecy written about him in a cave in Okinawa that foretells about how he will team up with King Caesar to save the world from Mechagodzilla. Again, yes, different Godzilla, but still.

- The fact that Titanosaurus was discovered by Dr. Mafune before even the likes of Mothra, King Kong, and Ghidorah made their presences known, technically making him one of the earliest kaiju in the series (specifically the sixth, or the eighth if you count the two Godzillas and two Rodans as separate entities), even though he doesn't appear on screen until the final movie.
"Name me one fight where Anguirus didn't get his dick kicked in."

I discovered recently that Maria Pitillo appeared in an episode of Kyle Chandler's show "Early Edition". Also, both Vera Farmiga and John Goodman starred in the movie "Captive State" along with Kevin Dunn who was Colonel Hicks in Godzilla 1998.
