History

An evolved form of Rodan pitched for early drafts of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993).

For the film's "considered draft", a male and female Rodan pair are attacked on Adonoa Island by Mechagodzilla, with only the female escaping alive. The female Rodan later destroys a Russian nuclear submarine and transforms into White Rodan as a result of the radioactive fallout. The newly-transformed White Rodan would proceed to steal a container carrying a distressed Baby Godzilla and form a nest atop a high-rise hotel. In a motherly fashion, White Rodan would tend to Baby Godzilla by breaking into Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome to find food, though her care would be short-lived as Union Mechagodzilla's arrival causes her to go on the offensive. While managing to stall the super-weapon with a low-altitude tornado, White Rodan would end up dying from exhaustion, her body falling into the sea.

In a revised "preparatory draft", the Rodan couple would be swapped out for Pteranodons, with the sole surviving Pteranodon transforming into White Rodan after destroying the Russian nuclear submarine. Its role would play out the same as before, dying unceremoniously after exhausting itself against Union Mechagodzilla.

Despite being something of a powered-up form, White Rodan retains all of regular Rodan's usual powers of mach speed flight and wind-based attacks with nothing new of its own. The biggest change is its body color being an eye-catchingly bright white. As further revisions were made to future drafts, the white color aspect of this modified Rodan would be dropped in favor of making it red, leading to the creation of Fire Rodan.

Trivia
  • In the 2016 book Shinji Nishikawa: Drawing Book of Godzilla (ISBN: 480030959X), Nishikawa mentions how two Rodan were considered early on as a reference to 1956's Rodan. He designed the male to sport a large cockscomb on its head to differentiate it from the female, while also giving them bulkier appearances. While none of his designs would be used for the film, his female Rodan design (featured in the gallery above) would go on to appear on Noriyoshi Ohrai's illustrated poster for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993) alongside the unused Union Mechagodzilla.
  • Some images in the gallery can be found in the 2012 book Heisei Godzilla Perfection (ISBN: 4048861190) and in the special features of the 2016 Toho-published Japanese DVD release of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993).
  • Was seemingly used as an incarnation of Rodan in the Japanese iOS/Android mobile game, Godzilla Kaiju Collection. Going under the name of "Rodan (Heisei)" (Japanese: ラドン (平成)), its colors appear highly reminiscent to one of Minoru Yoshida's designs.
