History

Created in the early stages for a sequel to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), the Titans consisted of "Titan I" and "Titan II", a male and female pair of dragon-like plesiosaurs. Having miraculously survived extinction, the peaceful Titans would have lived within the waters of the Pacific Ocean before being found and controlled by Dr. Mafune and the Black Hole Aliens in a plot to conquer the world. Later, during a battle with Godzilla, the Titans would fuse into a singular body known simply as "Titan", and together with Mechagodzilla, the entirety of Tokyo would be destroyed. Ultimately, however, both Titan and Mechagodzilla would be defeated by Godzilla.

Though mentioned in several publications, hardly any specifics of Titan I, Titan II, or Titan are known, outside of their ability to fuse and their passive temperaments. While they would later be written out of future revisions of what would become Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975), their fused Titan form would inspire the concept of Titanosaurus, who would end up becoming Dr. Mafune's obsession and Mechagodzilla's city-destroying partner.

Trivia
  • No official concept artwork of the Titans exists. The illustrations featured in the article picture and gallery are interpretations created by artist Chris Eye and commissioned for use on Toho Kingdom by staff. They were not created by Toho nor are they their official looks for the unused characters.
  • According to writer Yukiko Takayama, the "Titan" name was taken from Greek myths. Based on Plesiosauria, the two Titans are usually very friendly, but they become very violent when their necks "wreathe each other" and they unite. She included the Titans as foes as, according to her, "Godzilla movies always had a new kaiju character" for Godzilla to fight. This information can be found in the article "Words from the Heart: Yukiko Takayama Remembers Terror of Mechagodzilla" by totorom in issue #91 (Spring 2010) of the quarterly fanzine G-FAN.
  • In Terror of Mechagodzilla (Early Draft), the two Titans are distinguished as "Titan I" (Japanese: タイタンI) and "Titan II" (Japanese: タイタンII), and are male and female respectively. This information is mentioned in the 2012 Japanese book Toho Special Effects Movies: Complete Works (ISBN: 9784864910132).
  • When fused into the single "Titan" monster, Takayama wrote the form as being predominately female. This tidbit can be found in the 2014 publication Ishiro Honda: Uncrowned Master (ISBN: 9784800302212).
