LOST PROJECT HISTORY

On February 3rd, 2016, during the production of Shin Godzilla (2016), writer and director Hideaki Anno created a "Sequel Shin Godzilla Memo" proposal, with the main title being Shin Godzilla Raids Again. This proposal was intended to be a Toho Champion Festival-style monster showdown, harkening back to the days of the 1970's where existing Godzilla movies were edited and reissued under different names. Anno's intention was for Shin Godzilla Raids Again to be an alternative for audiences who might not be very invested in Shin Godzilla (2016), which featured the solo outing of the titular monster. The idea was for this movie to be helmed by Shinji Higuchi with a 2018 release date, the earliest possible release date for a domestic Godzilla film, and to be a project that would not take too much time or money for Toho to produce.

Anno eventually handed over the proposal, a rough outline, and image visuals to Shinji Higuchi and Toho as a gift, but following the release of Shin Godzilla (2016), discussion surrounding this potential sequel project was ultimately dropped.

Background and Trivia

  • Details regarding this proposal can be found in Shin Ultraman Design Works (ISBN 4905033284). Hideaki Anno believes his proposal never really moved forward as the pitch was too "premature," and it felt like a waste submitting something that never came to be. Still, Anno is aware that it all comes down to Toho as to whether or not this edit will ever come to pass.
