LOST PROJECT HISTORY

Originally envisioned as a TV series, this concept was created by Jin Hitoshi from Toho's TV department and Studio Zero, which was founded in 1963. The original story, which incorporated special effects footage from eight Toho monster films, was developed into a 13-episode season synopsis by the renowned duo "Fujiko Fujio," consisting of Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko.

The series was pitched as an "all-star program" featuring some of Toho's most iconic monsters in a TV format, though all the monster footage would be repurposed from existing films.

However, the project was ultimately canceled due to licensing complications related to the reuse of film footage. The issue particularly involved Rodan (1956) and the Godzilla series, as it was discovered late in the planning that Toho had sold the television rights to these films when they sold the overseas distribution rights. As a result, Toho was unable to use the footage freely.

It remains unclear why the program was canceled instead of being reworked to include footage from other available monster films. It’s possible, though, the series was deemed no longer financially viable if it didn't feature Godzilla and Rodan.

Background and Trivia

  • Godzilla and Toho Tokusatsu: Official Mook Vol.16 (ISBN: 9784065314913) notes that the unmade TV series was conceived by Jin Hitoshi of Toho's TV department and Studio Zero.
  • Studio Zero was paid ¥20,000 for the work "Fujiko Fujio", the pair of Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko, did on drafting the unused series synopsis. The pair, which drafted concepts for 13 episodes, recounted that this was actually the first income the then fledgling studio ever got. Outlined in The Two of Us Have Drawn Nothing But Boys' Manga (ISBN: 9784284700412).
  • The original story, which incorporated special effects footage taken from eight Toho monster films, was drafted into a season-long synopsis where they would film new footage that would play against the stock material. Discussed in Godzilla and Toho Tokusatsu: Official Mook Vol.16 (ISBN: 9784065314913).
  • The ultimate demise of the show was in using footage from Rodan (1956) and an undisclosed Godzilla film or films. Apparently it was realized too late that Toho, when selling the film rights for overseas distribution, also had included TV broadcasting rights. As a result, that barred Toho from freely televising footage from those movies. Brought up in The Two of Us Have Drawn Nothing But Boys' Manga (ISBN: 9784284700412).
  • The exact eight films that this show would have taken footage from is currently unknown. In The Two of Us Have Drawn Nothing But Boys' Manga (ISBN: 9784284700412), Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko mention that in planning they had selected Rodan (1956) and Mothra (1961) along with "Godzilla", although it's unclear if they meant the 1954 film and/or its two sequels at the time.
