When Leda: Fantastic Adventure of Yohko (1985) was first released as a direct-to-video OVA, it quickly became a hit. Its success was so significant that Toho decided to give it a theatrical release later that same year.
Unsurprisingly, Toho pushed for a sequel to capitalize on the film's success. Scheduled for a 1986 theatrical release, promotional efforts began pretty much right away. This included the release of the sequel's theme song "The Maze of Dreams" (夢の迷路 - Yume no Maze) by Rio Akimoto as a vinyl and cassette single. The song debuted on December 5th of 1985, literally before the first movie was given its theatrical release on December 21st, 1985. An image album for the sequel featuring music by Shiro Sagisu and songs by Rio Akimoto was also released, this one coming out on Janaury 21st, 1986.
Despite the promotional efforts getting underway and music released for the movie, very little is known about the project. Even the creative team behind the sequel remains largely a mystery, outside of composer Shiro Sagisu. While the plot is mostly unknown, promotions did feature a character resembling the villain from the first film, Zell, which could suggest his return or possibly indicate a different character with a similar appearance. Just as unclear as the project's details are the reasons behind its cancellation. It's possible the film wasn't outright canceled but instead faced repeated delays until Kaname Production, which had worked with Toho on the original film, went bankrupt in 1988, effectively halting the movie's development. |
