LOST PROJECT HISTORY

Before the development of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994), staff from the planning department of Toho Pictures were tasked with submitting stories that could be used for the follow up to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993). One of these submissions included a bizarre take on a "Godzilla vs. Godzilla" type match up, where the Godzilla from 1954 would have fought against a team of Godzillas. Each of these opposing Godzillas would have been a different color, being heavily inspired by the Super Sentai Series. This idea never gained any traction, however.

Background and Trivia

• This concept was briefly discussed in Tokusatsu Hiho Vol. 1 (ISBN 4800306485), in an interview between producer Shogo Tomiyama and production assistant Shinichiro Arimasa (referred to as Ryuichi Kasumi in the text). Arimasa referred to the idea as being something "like [Himitsu Sentai] Gorenger."

• In the 2014 book, Godzilla Character Encyclopedia: Toho Special Effects Movie Complete History (ISBN 4062190044), the proposal is mentioned in passing as part of a column centered around other more obscure lost Toho projects, such as Yamatai Kingdom (1978) and Godzilla vs. Ghost Godzilla (1994).
• Has no relation to the numerous "Godzilla vs. Godzilla" proposals from 1995, which largely centered around the ghost of the 1954 Godzilla doing battle with the Heisei-era Godzilla.
