Not a
great deal is known of this aborted concept. The
idea was promoted by UPA Productions' chief Henry
G. Saperstein, famous for his involvement in Frankenstein
vs. Baragon (1965) and The
War of the Gargantuas (1966), who was interested
in revisiting the Gargantuas concept. To shake up
the proposal, Godzilla would have been involved
to do battle with the creatures, the number of which
to be featured is unknown.
The budget for the production
had been set at $6 million, a very large sum for
the series at the time although a similar figure
would be utilized to produce The
Return of Godzilla (1984) some years later.
While not much has surfaced about the project, a listing was included in the annual Toho lineup in 1978. The listing is vague, with the title being "US-Japan Collaboration: Godzilla" rather than the actual title for the project. This is what led to a couple of incorrect assumptions, such as the infamous and unture Godzilla vs. the Devil project.
Regretfully, the concept never materialized past
the planning stages.
