Background - Images - Concept Evolution

Before the conception of a "Space" Godzilla, the original space terror, King Ghidorah, was brought to the table to be Godzilla's next opponent following Mechagodzilla. While the Ghidorah from 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was more of a man-made creation, this new movie would have included "Emperor Ghidorah," a monster that originated from the depths of space.

However, in the summer of 1994, Yamato Takeru (1994) would see its theatrical release in Japan, with the movie's primary antagonist being the eight-headed dragon, Orochi. As a result, Godzilla vs. Emperor Ghidorah would end up being rejected due to Orochi being so similar in nature to Ghidorah.

Background and Trivia

  • Details of this scrapped movie can be found in the pages of Godzilla Dictionary: New Edition (ISBN: 4773087250). While the movie itself is not specifically titled, the name of "Emperor Ghidorah" is mentioned in the text.
