LOST PROJECT HISTORY

Staff working in the planning department of Toho Pictures were tasked with submitting a story that could be used as the base for the next Godzilla movie. One of these submissions was Godzilla vs. Cthulhu, which would have pit the king of the monsters against one of writer H. P. Lovecraft's most well known mythical characters, Cthulhu. Unsurprisingly, this unusual proposal would have been heavily inspired by the fictional Cthulhu Mythos.

• No known concept artwork of this proposed version of Cthulhu exists. The article picture featuring Cthulhu is an interpretation created by artist Noah Cortez, and was commissioned for use on Toho Kingdom by staff. It was not created by Toho nor is it their official look for the unused character.
• Sparse details of this proposal can be found in the pages of Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla Completion (ISBN 9784798624631), in an interview with assistant producer Shinichiro Arimasa. Of the numerous submissions from the planning department, Godzilla vs. Cthulhu stood out as Arimasa's favorite.
• Mention of this proposal can be found in the pages of Godzilla & Toho Tokusatsu Official Mook vol.09: Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla / Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (ISBN 9784065314944).
• The two titular monsters would face off in the one-shot comic Godzilla vs. Cthulhu: A Death May Die Story released at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Written by Jonathan Maberry and published by CMON Games, the book has no connection to the 1994 proposal, instead acting as a promotional Godzilla crossover tie-in for the tabletop game, Cthulhu: Death May Die.
