Godzilla vs. Bagan

Japanese Title

ゴジラVSバガン
[Gojira vs. Bagan]

The super monster Bagan arrives on Earth, ushering in an era of calamity. Even the combined forces of Godzilla, Mothra, and the now-reconstituted Rodan prove no match for the otherworldly powers of the demon beast. In a last-ditch effort, Godzilla absorbs an enormous amount of radioactivity and mutates into the powerful form of Super Godzilla to match Bagan's might.

LOST PROJECT HISTORY

As the intended release date of first American Godzilla movie drew nearer, Toho sought to end the Japanese run of movies on a bombastic high note. Having returned from her space travels, Mothra was set to appear alongside Godzilla and Rodan, the latter two having somehow "unmerged" their life forces since Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993). Their opponent would have been the three-horned monster Bagan, hot off the press as just having made its official franchise debut as the final boss in Super Godzilla. Similarly, Godzilla's "Super" form from the same game would have made its big screen premiere to combat the alien strength of Bagan.

As rumor has it, the project was canned following yet another delay of Jan de Bont's Godzilla, allowing Toho time to produce a follow-up "Godzilla 7" movie in Christmas 1995 to properly close out the Heisei series, which followed the theme of "the death of Godzilla."

Background and Trivia

  • The article picture featuring the Bagan model was created by 2009MECHAGODZILLA, and the Super Godzilla model was created by Digiwip. Both used Minoru Yoshida's concept art as a base and were commissioned for use on Toho Kingdom by staff. Credit goes to Wikizilla for the render of Mothra.
  • Mention of this unrealized pitch can be found in issue #12 (Nov./Dec. 1994) of the quarterly fanzine G-FAN, in a "G-MAIL" column with J.D. Lees corresponding with fans of the magazine.
  • Not to be confused with the 1991 draft Godzilla vs. Bagan by Kazuki Omori; this project goes untitled in the original sourced article. While possible that some elements may have been carried over into the 1995 version of Godzilla vs. Bagan, any connection between them remains unconfirmed.
