History

One of the earliest concepts submitted to Toho for what would eventually become the Heisei "VS Series" Mechagodzilla. A metal life form that traveled to Earth via a meteorite, Berserk was regarded as a "battle organism" that grew by taking in metals. After absorbing enough metallic substances, it would copy the appearance of Godzilla, and its completed body would be a form of Mechagodzilla.

Berserk was apart of a 14-page proposal submitted to Toho by Japanese anime designer Yutaka Izubuchi, who is known for his work in the Gundam series. The inspirations are prevalent on the monster's Mechagodzilla form, which is littered with metal platings, tubes, and bolts, and its body being capable of opening multiple hatches to fire hidden weapons.

As development for the next "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" movie continued, the Godzilla vs. Berserk draft and the Berserk monster concept were left by the wayside, though the introduction of the Super-X3 in the proposal would eventually see use in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995).

Trivia
  • The colored picture in the gallery was done by artist hea777 using Yutaka Izubuchi's black-and-white concept sketch as a basis for use by Toho Kingdom. The colored look is an interpretation, and not Toho's official colors for the unused character.
  • The mention of this monster and its few pieces of concept artwork can be found in the 2012 publication Heisei Godzilla Perfection (ISBN: 4048861190).
