Gamera ガメラ [Dark Horse]

A year had past since the guardian monster known as Gamera had vanquished his eons old nemesis Gyaos, the Shadow of Evil, from the Japanese mainland. Before standing against the unyielding might of the Legion, Gamera found himself called into action to protect humanity once again against a familiar threat.

Another Gyaos had made its presence known, this time near Guanajota Harbor, located on the coast of Mexico. Just as Asagi Kusanagi, the same teenage girl who had helped Gamera triumph over the Super Gyaos in Tokyo via a magical amulet forged from the same ancient civilization that had birthed both monsters, was partaking in a seaplane tour of Guanajota, the giant turtle awoke. Rising from the depths of the sea, Gamera ignited his jets and took to the skies, making his way towards the Gyaos' location just as the flying predator began attacking the city and feeding on the fleeing populace. Unbeknownst to Gamera, this Gyaos was different. It had not hatched from an egg as its predecessors had, but rather was born in a laboratory, genetically engineered with DNA stolen from the original Super Gyaos. Not that this mattered to Gamera; Natural or artificial, the Guardian of the Universe would end the beast's threat once and for all.

It wasn't long before the soaring guardian spotted his target. Flying in from behind, Gamera announced his arrival with a plasma fire blast, hitting the Gyaos in the back before landing on his feet. Unfortunately, the bird-like reptile retaliated quickly with its Sonic Beam, striking Gamera and slicing open his cheek as the beam ricocheted. As Asagi suffered the same injury on her own face, Gyaos flew in and tackled Gamera, knocking the titanic turtle onto his back. Gamera fought back quickly, slashing the predator's leg with one of his tusks. This attack allowed Gamera to return to his feet, but the flying monster came in fast, slamming its skull against Gamera's plastron, knocking the terrapin flat and into the waves of the harbor.

Gathering her strength, Asagi clutched her amulet and did her best to relay a strategy to Gamera. Thankfully, the guardian received the message. Grabbing hold of his foe, Gamera fell backwards, flipping the Gyaos over and into a nearby oil tanker, causing the ship to burst and covering the evil creature in its payload. With his foe drenched in and surrounded by oil, Gamera unleashed one last Plasma Fireball, igniting the oil and sparking an inferno that cooked the Gyaos alive. With the last Shadow of Evil burnt to a crisp, Gamera took the the air once more, disappearing until he was needed again.

It didn't take long before that time came. Another malicious creature, an aquatic terror known as Zigra, made his presence known, disturbed from his slumber on the ocean floor thanks to a nuclear test conducted by the French Navy. As Zigra attacked their ships, he endangered a man named Lutz, who had stolen Asagi's amulet from her and was wrongfully arrested by the Navy. Seemingly sensing that the amulet was near danger, perhaps even thinking it may have been Asagi herself that was being threatened, Gamera appeared on the scene, nailing Zigra with a Plasma Fireball.

Just as the flying turtle closed the distance between him and this new monster, preparing to go on the attack, Zigra opened fire with his Tri-Color Ray Blast, scoring a direct hit on Gamera and instantly paralyzing the reptile, sending him crashing down into the waves and sinking to the ocean's depths. However, when a nearby submarine detected Gamera's prone form growing closer, it launched a torpedo at the unmoving monster. The fire from the resulting explosion was enough to rejuvenate the ancient guardian, who fired up his hind thrusters and blasted out of the water like a rocket, sinking his tusks into Zigra's chest before the shark even had a chance to react. Flying his aquatic opponent out to the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, Gamera dropped the wounded sea creature into a currently erupting volcano, incinerating Zigra completely.

About a month had passed since the incident with Zigra when the city of Paris, France suddenly found itself under assault by the devastating tentacles of the monstrous Viras. Another bio-engineered creation by the same evil mastermind responsible for the Gyaos in Guanajota, the squid-like monster rampaged through the city, destroying everything in his path. Having already used his psychic powers to enslave his own creator, Viras was intent on claiming the entire world as his own domain.

However, just as it seemed as though the demon's plans for world conquest were destined to fail with the arrival of Gamera, the unthinkable happened: The Guardian of the Universe intentionally intercepted a missile meant for the evil cephalopod, taking the hit instead. It was then that it became obvious that the multi-limbed creature had already ensnared the terrapin's mind, using Gamera as a willing living shield with which to block the military's attacks. Again and again, Gamera took the literal bullet for Viras, allowing himself to be struck by every rocket and missile fired by the French Military in order to keep his mind-controlling master safe. But as had been proven before, while Gamera was powerful and could withstand a few hits from mankind's firepower, he could not survive a prolonged assault. Protecting Viras with his very being was taking a very clear toll on Gamera, and the guardian monster became woozier and bloodier as he was bombarded with shell after shell.

In the nick of time, Viras' creator-turned-minion, who was using Asagi's stolen amulet to help her monstrous master control Gamera, was killed. This ended up disconnecting the amulet from Viras' mind. Now free from the evil creature's control, Gamera retaliated immediately. He zeroed in on the monstrous squid, but Viras unleashed powerful psionic energy bolts, hitting Gamera hard and knocking him out of the sky.

As Viras approached, it seemed that Gamera was too badly hurt to continue to fight, until the malfunctioning engine of an intergalactic bounty hunter's ship exploded, engulfing the enormous turtle with flame. Completely rejuvenated, his strength fully restored, Gamera went on the attack. Tearing a building from the ground, the mighty defender used it as a shield against Viras' psionic bolts, then smashed it against the evil cephalopod's head. With Viras distracted, Gamera quickly landed and bit down on one of the monster's tentacles. With a powerful flick of his neck, Gamera tossed Viras and sent him sailing through the air, impaling the creature on the spire of the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

With his mind freed and the latest threat to Earth and mankind slain, Gamera withdrew into his shell and blasted off into the sky, disappearing into the stratosphere. Though he was victorious that day, it would only be a matter of time before the Guardian of the Universe came to humanity's aid once again.

• Gamera only fires three Plasma Fireballs in the entirety of all four issues. He never once uses them against Viras.
• Gamera travels via "flying saucer mode" only once, at the very end of the final issue.
