Comments
When it comes to something being done to death on the CD format, Akira Ifukube's 1983 Symphonic Fantastia instantly comes to mind. For those not familiar with the music, it's basically a series of new orchestral pieces created from themes found in the composer's science fiction Toho films. Unfortunately, this music has been released again and again on CD, with this particular release being from Jun'ichi Hirokami and was originally recorded in August and September of 1995. This composition, also divided amongst 29 tracks so that each theme that was utilized is easy to spot, was previously released in Volume 4 of the Artistry of Ifukube series back in 1995. When it comes down to it, the 1995 release is superior on account of it also including a 30th track called "Rondo in Burlesque," which clocks in at ten minutes. However, the Tribute disc retails for about ¥1,000 yen less (roughly $9-10) and is much easier to find, so it's up to one's personally preference although completists will likely search out the older edition.
