I first purchased this soundtrack back in 2007. I popped it in my CD player, heard a few tracks and popped it out, left utterly unimpressed, and stacked it in my "to review" pile of CDs. Well it's 2013, some six years later, and I'm finally sitting down to tackle this CD and... it's about as unimpressive as my memory recalls.
The soundtrack is all
vocal tracks, without any instrumental only work, and is primarily a collection of older songs. The leading song, "There's Always Tomorrow" by Re:Japan, is one exception and was created for the movie. The song is a bit goofy, sounding more like it would have fit into a children's film than a drama, and none of the singers could be described as pleasant. The disappointing opening track kind of sets the tone for the rest of the CD, even though the bulk of the music here is culled from the 1980's. This ranges from the okay "Between the Sky and the Earth" by Chiharu Matsuyama, to the utterly awful "Transistor Radio" by RC Succession.
While the CD doesn't have many redeeming qualities,
the disc is saved from a one star rating thanks to YMO's infectious "For You, Room in my Heart" which is an enjoyably dated song. Other decent tracks include h the slightly big band "Chocolate and Two Bottles" by Begin and the 1960's style "Come On-a My House" by Chiemi Eri, which is a cover of the 1950's song by Ross Bagdasarian except spoken in poor English with some Japanese mixed in.
Overall, it's hard to recommend this deceiving soundtrack, which is more of a compilation of songs from the 1980's, because unless one is a big fan of songs from this decade from Japan it doesn't have a lot going for it.
