The first
soundtrack release for the 1997 Mothra film is a nice
collection of music from the feature. Composer Toshiyuki
Watanabe delivers a very pleasant score here that
manages to host both very soothing and more action
oriented cues. Watanabe's work also manages to capture
the more carefree and kid oriented feeling of the
production, as tracks like "At the Cape"
work very well to express the more lighthearted nature
of the proceedings. The standout track, though, is
really Dagahra's theme, "Dagahra Arrives",
which is a nicely constructed cue effectively utilizing
drum work to express the mass and power of the creature.
Overall, this disc is a good sampler of the music
from the film and contains most of the feature's best
themes; however, it's a very short CD at a runtime
of only a little under 33 minutes and is missing a
large amount of music from the movie that would later
appear on the two disc set from the company (POCX-1089/90).
It should be noted that this disc is identical to the
later ADV release in terms of music selection and running
time. The only difference between the two is that the
US version contains more tracks as 7 and 9 have been split
into smaller pieces. Given this fact, it's hard to suggest
picking up this release as the ADV one is far cheaper
while the selection on this CD is also inferior to the
two disc edition by PolyGram.
