This score
for the 2000 science fiction film Pyrokinesis
is certainly an interesting album for those who enjoy
composer Kow
Otani's work. This score more or less bridges the
gap between Otani's styles, as the soundtrack contains
some cues that sound like they were taken directly out
of his Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) score, while others
are synthesizer heavy like some of the composer's later
work such as Godzilla,
Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
(2001). It's not one of his better scores, but has enough going for it to be enjoyable.
In terms of the soundtrack's strength, it has amazing piano work that is seen in themes like "Age of Madness", which is incredibly soothing and probably the standout cue from the disc. The very majestic "Goddess of the Century's End" is also an excellent piece, bordering on soothing at first but builds into a great theme that was used effectively for the movie's climax.
Despite some strong cue's, the score's biggest hurdle
is simply that the compositions just don't sound very "rich"
as we have come to expect from the composer's Gamera
soundtracks; of course this isn't particularly Otani's
fault, as it sounds like he was given a very modest
orchestra for this production. As a result, the score
mostly seems to fall back on simpler and more subtle
motifs, although there are a couple of odd balls thrown
in such as the deliciously over the top "An Unpunished
Crime"
and the very video game-esque "A Mysterious Incident".
Bottom line, this isn't a particularly great score, but there is enough here to recommend for fans of the composer or the film in general. As a whole, its nothing spectacular, but a few themes really standout and are what I would consider "iPod worthy".
