This disc
from Media Factory features the soundtrack to the short
feature Pikachu's PikaBooand the
2001 movie that it screened with: Pokémon: Celebi
a Timeless Encounter.
In terms of the music for the short feature, it's expeditely
upbeat, starting with a rustic sounding cue called "Residence"
before moving into a vocal track by artist Whiteberry
that isn't bad, although isn't particularly memorable.
The next three tracks sound like what one would expect
from a standard Saturday morning cartoon show, featuring
a wide range of instruments in an over the top manner
while a quick tempo is kept through out. The last track
for the short is a song by Kumiko Endoh, which is fairly
pleasing if one enjoys Japanese pop.
The remaining eleven tracks are dedicated to the feature
film, and feature a noticeable shift in conducting style
from Shinji Miyazaki. There are several nice cues here,
including "The Legendary Forest's Theme" and
"Vicious' Theme". There is also an updated version
of "Aim to be a Pokémon Master", the
animated series' first opening song done by Rika Matsumoto,
which is arguably its best version to date. The best track
off this release, though, is the amazingly soothing "One
Celebi" theme that is supported by light vocal work.
As for the closing song by Fujii Fumiya, its a very pleasant
track that features both nice vocal and piano work.
Overall, this is a fairly good soundtrack. Nothing remarkable
or great about it, but still not bad all the same. It's
not the best soundtrack attached to the theatrical Pokémon
features, but is certainly better than some of the lesser
ones Miyazaki has composed for. It's a shame, though, that
it's a fairly short CD, especially since it contains music to both features.
