Takayuki
Hattori has often been given an unfair reputation
outside of Japan as a fairly poor composer, while in the
country he is often hailed as a great contemporary in
the field, even being nominated for numerous Japanese
Academy Awards for his work. In reality, though, Hattori
is a fairly uneven composer. Sometimes his scores work
well to mesh with the feature film or particular cues
in a soundtrack stand out favorably, while other times
he simply misses his mark. Unfortunately, his score for
the 2004 production Nin X Nin: The Ninja Star Hattori
is one of those lesser efforts from Hattori. To his credit,
the "Main Theme" is kind of catchy here, while
the "Fight" theme is definitely another interesting
cue, having a very "video game" style vibe to
it both in flow and repetition. The rest of the soundtrack
is kind of bland, though. As a casual listen, the CD isn't
bad, yet there is nothing here to really entice the listener
to play this disc very often.
