Like most
CD based games, the 1995 Godzilla title by Sega doubles
as a soundtrack when placed in a CD player. Also, like
most CD games, the first track is data, comprised of information
for the game itself, which translates into a lot of dead
space unless skipped.
In terms of the music, it's mostly a pseudo compilation
featuring themes from earlier Godzilla films. On one hand,
the actual music is great, the variety that works very
well as a stand alone experience. However, the problem
is that these themes have been edited down and drastically
shortened in order to be more easily looped in the game's
soundtrack. The ending result is a lot of 30-60 second
cues that leave the listener just wanting to hear the
original, unedited, themes. A couple of the transitions
here are also a little rough, as the music seems to end
abruptly due to the way Sega edited the theme, something
that is particularly noticeable on the "SY-3 Sortie"
track. The disc isn't entirely filled with stock music,
though, as the last two tracks are unique to the game.
For video game music, both are fairly soothing and avoid
the normal pitfall of repetition.
Overall, the musical content makes an interesting bonus
for people who purchased the game, but still leaves a
lot to be desired. The very short runtime of a little
over half an hour (around 50 minutes if one's CD player
picks up all the dead space) is really the nail in the
coffin for this awkward collection of music.
For those wondering, the tracks come from the following
movies:
2. Godzilla
(1954)
3. Mothra
vs. Godzilla (1964)
4. Mothra

that the site's staff has compiled the ones below using
their original titles from the movies or what screens
they are tied to.
