The second
bonus item in this box set keeps with the tradition of
converting old LP releases to the CD format. For this
one, Toho has chosen a Zone Fighter record that
focuses on Godzilla and King Ghidorah's appearances in
the show. Unfortunately, this original LP deals largely
with "radio drama" style cues, which are found
here on tracks one through eight. This means that these
tracks contain the full music, dialogue and sound effects
from the included episodes, which are also heavily abridged
to cover the basic plot of each in three through eight
minutes.
Thankfully, the disc is not comprised solely of these
radio dramas, as it also features songs and some of the
background music from the show. However, for those hoping
this might surpass VAP's earlier release of the score
(VPCG-84210), they
will be undoubtedly disappointed. First off, there is
some music here that was missing from the 1993 release,
specifically M53 (all of the music has been bridged differently,
so this is found in the "Decisive Battle! Zone &
Godzilla" track), the "Meteor Victory Song"
and tracks 15 through 17 also have some missing cues.
Speaking of, track 17 is easily one of the more god awful
themes I have heard in awhile. It's very easy to see why
VAP left off a bulk of this track on their own release,
and quite honestly I don't recall most of that music being
used in the show. Other than that though, VAP's offering
easily trumps the selection here and is a much more complete
presentation of the music from the show. To give this
disc a fair shake, Toho appears to have remastered a lot
of this content pretty well, with stuff like the songs
sounding much more distinct and robust compared to earlier
releases.
Overall, this disc is a nice bonus for those who only
have a passing interest in Godzilla, King Ghidorah and
Gigan's appearances in the show, but larger enthusiasts
should seek out the 1993 release for the show's music.
