| An interesting
release from Toshiba, under their "Futureland"
brand, is the soundtrack to the 1964 feature Dogora.
The music is composed by the famous Akira
Ifukube, who admiringly stays away from rehashing
his previous themes. The soundtrack boasts a number of
nice cues too, such as the memorable "Main Title"
and "The Air Corps Begin Their Strike" theme.
The score also stands out from other Ifukube soundtracks
for its use of the musical saw, giving it a distinct flavor
from a lot of his other work. Like other CDs from Toshiba,
this disc also features outtakes, sound effects and the
audio from the trailer. This disc rounds out its runtime
though acting as a compilation, also featuring outtakes
from Ifukube's Godzilla scores. Now including this might
have seemed like an odd choice for this release, but given
that the Dogora content only clocks in at 43
minutes one can at least appreciate that Toshiba felt
obligated to give the consumer a little more bang for
their buck on this particular title. The selection from
the Godzilla films is also noteworthy for not being featured
on the earlier "Futureland" Godzilla soundtracks
from the company, opting for outtakes that weren't included.
However, all of these tracks do appear on Toho's "Perfect
Collection" run. One last thing worth noting about
this release is the booklet contained within, that goes
behind the making of the soundtrack in good detail, along
with some information on all of the instruments used in
the performance. The booklet also features a small cue
list translated into "English", although it
uses the Dogola name and features such infamous translations
as "Dogola Appears 9shu, Max" so it doesn't
end up being all that useful.
