A fairly
early soundtrack, this disc features the music from the
1985 vehicle for the music group the Checkers. It's a
fairly diverse mix of music, containing cover versions
of several American classics such as "Oh Carol"
and "Hound Dog", original songs and themes.
Overall, the selection present is interesting, although
nothing particularly stands out. The cover songs are probably
the most noteworthy aspect of this release, which pale
compared to the original but are still nice renderings
none the same. Sadly, the biggest sin of this release
is simply the lack of reservation in including dialogue
and sound effect clips from the movie. This is particularly
fatal to the "non-vocal" music, denoted as B.G.M.
on this release. Often times dialogue will play over the
music, or there will be long gaps of silence as moments
from the movie are sampled with it. Consequently, it seems
like someone involved in the production level of this
disc felt that the non-lyrical tracks weren't strong enough
on their own. To be fair, none of them are particularly
memorable, save perhaps part of "To Tokyo",
but running the dialogue over the music just seems to
defeat part of the reason why people purchase soundtracks
in the first place. Bottom line, unless one really enjoys
pop music from the 1980's, this disc is a really tough
sell.
On a side note, it's worth mentioning that this soundtrack
was later re-released by Pony Canyon (CD Number: PCCA.02005)
in 2004. Both discs have the same track selection, although
I can't comment if one might have superior audio quality
compared to the other.
