First
off, huge thanks goes out to Robert Storch for sending
this disc for review!
This CD, actually a CD-R, was distributed by Ed Godziszewski
and Norman England (via noman@gol.com).
The disc contains the full score to the documentary
feature "Bringing Godzilla Down to Size",
which is found on Classic Media's Rodan
and War of the Gargantuas DVD. Composed
by
Kow Otani,
the music found on this CD is a lot better than
what many would expect for a DVD supplement feature.
The score feels slightly like a video game soundtrack,
which is natural given that a orchestra was not
used. To Otani's credit, a few of these cues, like "History
Lesson" and "Volcanic Reaction",
are neat. The problem is that the music excels
at what it was intended to do: sift into the background.
Truth be told, the music doesn't fare too well
as a standalone experience. These themes are mostly
on the low key side and don't draw a tremendous
amount of attention to themselves, outside of the
rousing "Old School"
track. There isn't a whole lot of music to this release
either. Still, it's a neat little CD to have, and
Otani's inclusion here should pique interest. The
music, despite a weak initial reaction, does kind
of grow on the listener with time as well.
Bottom line, it's hard to be too critical of this
release, which isn't even intended for mass market
to begin with. For what it is, Otani does a fine job
and it's unfair to stack it up against the commercial
film scores. That said, it still isn't particularly
gripping, but hardcore fans will probably enjoy the
rare opportunity to pick this up. As a side note,
these are limited to 250 copies, each of which denotes
the number on the back of the cover. Earlier copies
released also had tracks 8 and 10 reversed on the
back cover, with the Ending Titles being cited as
track 8.
