For many
North American fans, this compilation from GNP Crescendo
offered an early listen to the later day Heisei films
that had yet to be released back in early 1998. As the
title of the CD implies, this set covers the Godzilla
films from The
Return of Godzilla (1984) through Godzilla
vs. Destoroyah (1995), with a bulk of the music
being creditably to the great Akira
Ifukube. In terms of the music selection process,
GNP did a fairly good job. I'm sure there is not a one
who wouldn't make a suggestion for either some theme that
needed to be include, Rodan's theme comes to mind for
me, or something that probably shouldn't have found its
way onto this mix, but it's impossible to please everyone
and this disc does a good job of covering a lot of the
basics of these seven films. The tracks themselves appear
to have come from the materials used to make the respective
two disc sets for the 1990's films, with key indications
being the Godzilla roar that was added into the Godzilla
vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994) main title and the use
of "Mothra's Song," a bonus on the two disc
set that is a more pop oriented rendering not unlike what
was found in the Rebirth of Mothra series. This
also explains the curious "Moguera vs. SpaceGodzilla
#2" track title when there is no #1 present. The
disc rounds itself out with a remix of Ifukube's "Monster
Zero March" theme done by Neil Norman.
