Way back in 2018, Toho announced plans to make a stronger focus on film investment outside Japan. This announcement was made on the back of three movies that Toho was investing in at the time. These were: Detective Pikachu (2019), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and an undated remake of the 2016 movie Your Name. The first two projects were with Legendary, while the third was with Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. Details are now starting to emerge on the Your Name live action remake. This article is a news roundup of information as it’s released on this project.

As part of the agreement, Toho will provide financing and handle distribution of the movie in Japan. Meanwhile Paramount will handle releasing the film in all other territories.

The project has a new director attached to it. Back in 2019, Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb was attached to direct the project. Arrival and Birdbox writer Eric Heisserer was attached to draft the story. Star Wars: Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams is tapped to produce along with Genki Kawamura, who produced the original anime. At the time, Kawamura said: “Marc was our first choice to direct this refashioned interpretation of the film from the moment we explored creating an American version. As we saw in (500) Days Of Summer, Marc has a tremendous talent for telling great love stories and in the same way moviegoers were captivated by the original film, we are certain Marc will engage fans of the original and an entirely new audience for these characters’ beautiful journey. With J.J. Abrams producing, Eric Heisserer writing and Marc directing, this project officially has the team we dreamed about.” Details were scarce, although it was noted that the male lead would live in Chicago, of unmentioned descent, and would swap places with a woman of Native American descent living in a rural area.

Fast forward to September 18 of this year. The project is now going through a dramatic shift. The Big Sick writer Emily V. Gordon was previously set to work the script from Eric Heisserer writing. However, not only is she being replaced by a new writer but director Marc Webb is being replaced as well. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung will now not just direct the upcoming movie but will rewrite it as well. Currently it’s unknown if the scarce plot details before are still accurate. It was noted in January of this year that the writer and director of the original Your Name, Makoto Shinkai, was established as having approval rights over the script for the remake. It’s possible therefore that this shakeup was prompted by his response, although even if so it’s possible the script doesn’t go through a dramatic shift from Heisserer’s and Gordon’s foundation.

The project is currently undated in terms of release.
