After the success of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024), another installment in the MonsterVerse series is now in the works at Legendary. This article is a roundup of news related to this sequel, titled Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, which will be the sixth in the MonsterVerse franchise. The current release date for the upcoming project is March 26th, 2027.

May 9th, 2025 update

The film now has a name. Along with a logo, the film has been unveiled as Godzilla X Kong: Supernova. The announcement also confirmed the previously disclosed release date, with the movie still slated to hit theaters on March 26th, 2027. In addition, the news reiterated the cast and crew for the film. Of note is that it continues the tradition of honoring Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) director Yoshimitsu Banno, who remains credited as an executive producer for his foundational role in launching the MonsterVerse. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the next theatrical feature film in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise from director Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) stars Dan Stevens (reprising his role as Trapper), Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us, Apple Cider Vinegar), Jack O’Connell (Sinners, 28 Years Later), Alycia Debnam-Carey (Apple Cider Vinegar, Fear the Walking Dead), Sam Neill (Apples Never Fall, Jurassic Park), Matthew Modine (Oppenheimer, Stranger Things), and Delroy Lindo (Sinners, The Good Fight). Dave Callaham (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Michael Lloyd Green (I Am Mother) wrote the draft. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric Mcleod, Brian Rogers, and Thomas Tull, with executive producers Jen Conroy, Jay Ashenfelter, Yoshimitsu Banno, and Kenji Okuhira.

April 24th, 2025 update

While promoting the second season of The Last of Us, star Kaitlyn Dever revealed that the next installment in the MonsterVerse will be filmed in Queensland, Australia. This location has previously served as the shooting local for other entries in the franchise, including Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024).

Alongside the filming location announcement, several key members of the production team were also announced. Returning to the franchise is composer Henry Jackman, who scored Kong: Skull Island. Other crew members include director of photography Dan Mindel, production designer Stefan Dechant, editor Josh Schaeffer, VFX supervisor Kelly Port, costume designer Ann Foley, makeup artist Sabrina Wilson, and hairstylist Jules Holdren.

 

April 15th, 2025 update

The upcoming movie’s cast continues to expand, as Sam Neill, probably best known for his roles in the Jurassic Park franchise and Omen III: The Final Conflict, joins the lineup. His role is currently unknown.

 

April 9th, 2025 update

Actress Alycia Debnam-Carey, known for her roles in Fear the Walking Dead and the mini-series Apple Cider Vinegar, is the latest addition to the cast of Legendary’s upcoming, currently untitled MonsterVerse film. Details about her character remain under wraps.

 

February 21st, 2025 update

The casting news keeps coming, with veteran actor Delroy Lindo joining the next MonsterVerse film. Lindo, whose career spans several decades, has appeared in numerous films such as Malicious and Gone in 60 Seconds. He will also star alongside Jack O’Connell in the upcoming film Sinners, who, like Lindo, will appear in the next MonsterVerse film.

Sources indicate that Lindo will play a character within Monarch, serving as the boss of Kaitlyn Dever’s currently undisclosed role.

February 19th, 2025 update

The casting news floodgates have opened, with another report revealing that actor Jack O’Connell has signed on for the next MonsterVerse film. O’Connell, who has been acting for several years, is known for his roles in Unbroken (2014) and Trial by Fire (2018), among others. Recently, he has been even more active, with upcoming appearances in Sinners and 28 Years Later. At this time, the specifics of O’Connell’s role remain undisclosed other than he will be the brother of the character Kaitlyn Dever is playing.

 

January 31st, 2025 update

More casting news is beginning to bubble up: reports are out that actor Dan Stevens, who played Trapper in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024), is in talks to reprise his role in the upcoming entry in the MonsterVerse.

 

January 24th, 2025 update

It’s been a while since we’ve heard news about the next MonsterVerse film featuring Godzilla and Kong. That’s changed today with an update that actress Kaitlyn Dever is in talks to join the cast in an undisclosed part.

Dever is best known for her role as Eve Baxter on the long-running sitcom Last Man Standing, which aired for a decade. She also garnered critical praise for her performance as Amy in the 2019 hit film Booksmart. Recently, she’s appeared in the acclaimed series Dopesick and is set to join the cast of The Last of Us for its second season.

 

June 29th, 2024 update

Although there are still no concrete details about the upcoming sequel, the project does have a date now. March 26th, 2027, is the release date that Legendary has earmarked for the next MonsterVerse entry.

 

June 6th, 2024 update

Not even a month after it was announced that Adam Wingard would not return to the direct the sequel to Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024), Legendary has found their director. The company unveiled that Grant Sputore would be helming the upcoming film in the MonsterVerse, with a script being worked on by Dave Callaham. For past experience, Sputore does not have a ton of work to his resume. In 2010 he directed four episodes of the show Castaway while in 2019 he directed the Netflix sci-fi movie I Am Mother starring Hilary Swank, but otherwise has served as an executive producer on two films.

 

May 10th, 2024 update

It has been announced that Adam Wingard, who directed Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024), will not be returning to direct the next installment in the MonsterVerse. The decision was noted as amicable, driven by Legendary’s desire to get another film out sooner than Wingard’s schedule would have permitted.

Per an article from the Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Dave Callaham has been tasked with drafting the currently untitled follow-up to Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (2024). Callaham created early drafts for 2014’s Godzilla, worked as a co-writer on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), and has written screenplays for The Expendables (2010), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and Mortal Kombat (2021).
