Toho International and Santa Cruz Skateboards have announced a collaboration timed for the King of the Monsters’ 70th anniversary this year. The collection will include skateboards and a wide range of apparel. In keeping with the anniversary theme, the collection will hit retail in November 2024.
Godzilla 70th Anniversary Collection
Santa Cruz Skateboards is rolling out a large line of items to ring in Godzilla’s 70th anniversary. This includes eight skateboard deck designs along with a selection of apparel including tees, hats, hoodies, plus a sticker pack with the skate deck artwork in sticker form. Probably the star attraction from the collection is one of the skateboard decks that is made to resemble Godzilla’s skin texture. Besides having a unique feel to the board it also has the distinction of being the company’s largest skateboard to date, measuring in at 11’’ x 32’’.
As for the artwork and designs, to quote:
“For this collaboration, Santa Cruz tapped some of their favorite Artists to reimagine the classic graphics of Corey O’Brien, Tom Knox, Rob Roskopp, and Natas Kaupas, based on the original artwork by Jim Phillips, in a variety of iconic styles inspired by iterations of Godzilla through the years, from Shin Godzilla to Mechagodzilla, and more.”
The design work itself is quite unique and the concepts sometimes very original. A great example of the latter is the Little Godzilla skateboard, which features a windup SpaceGodzilla along with the Star Falcon. Some are more straightforward but are great homages to the character’s legacy. This includes a largely Showa series inspired board that features Godzilla, Anguirus, Hedorah, Mechagodzilla, Minilla, Kamacuras, Gigan, Kumonga, Ebirah, Rodan, King Caesar, King Ghidorah, Jet Jaguar and the Xilien UFO. All of the characters are modeled after the Showa versions, with the exception of Mothra that features coloring from Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992).
As with other collaborations from Santa Cruz Skateboards, this will be a limited edition line.
Santa Cruz Skateboards is no stranger to collaborations, having done past ones with Marvel, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spongebob, Vans and many others. Recent collabs include Stranger Things in 2022 and Pokémon in 2023. One of their most famous tie ins was with the Simpsons back in 2011, which included a replica of Bart Simpsons’ skateboard as part of the line.
