  • A little more than a year has passed since Gareth Edwards’ long-anticipated Godzilla (2014) arrived in multiplexes and was greeted with healthy box office receipts, a favorable reaction from Toho, and a generally positive response from the audience—not to mention a stream of laurels bestowed upon the film by the Godzilla fan community. Since then, there’s been a good deal of talk regarding how fans interpret the film and, even more so, what they expect—and hope—to see in the next entry in the series from Legendary Pictures. In spite of the favorable notices, there were some common criticisms even amongst the enthusiasts: the eponymous monster’s surprising lack of screen time; the sudden replacement of Bryan Cranston as the film’s primary protagonist and emotional core; the frequent cutting away at the start of what appeared to be a big action sequence; and a few other minor gripes that didn’t seem to totally wreck anyone’s enjoyment of the film. • Well, its summer again and with it came a new Godzilla 2015 contest in celebration of the new video game! Originally I was going to do a giveaway for just the game, but I thought this would be better as a follow up to our Summer 2014 Contest. So I reached out to our friends at NECA and Legendary Pictures and they jumped on board to help make winning a little more special! Since I’m giving out two copies of the game, I split it up into two bundles. (more…)

  • Leading up to the release of Godzilla (2014), a wide array of promotions took place. One of the more memorable was the advance poster from 2013. Now Mondo is releasing a statue based on the teaser poster for the 2014 Godzilla film. Created by Phantom City Creative for the 2013 Comic Con, the poster showed a stark image of a Godzilla constructed out of fallen debris against a red background. Now, two years later, the poster is being turned into a statue. Set to debut at the 2015 Comic Con, Mondo has released images of a prototype ahead of the appearance at the show. (more…)

  • IDW Publishing continues their ongoing Godzilla comic saga with Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. This series lasted for 25 issues, from June 25th, 2013, to July 8th, 2015. This is actually a record for a comic series based on the King of the Monsters, besting the 24 issue run that Marvel comics achieved with the character back in the 1970’s. The long series also featured a host of Toho monsters, including some surprises at the time like Zilla and the Gargantuas: Sanda and Gaira. While the creative team shifted a little, most of the issues were done by writer Chris Mowry, who wrote the Hedorah vs. Mechagodzilla issue of Godzilla Legends #4, and artist Matt Frank, who did art duties on the Anguirus vs. Destoroyah issue of Godzilla Legends #1. • Around this time last year I was very blessed to meet the awesome Akira Takarada while visiting Dallas Comic Con a local comic book convention, and cover that event for Toho Kingdom by writing an article detailing the convention for my fellow Godzilla fans. In concluding that article I wrote that I hopped to see them follow up their success with Mr. Takarada by adding more Godzilla or Kaiju related guests. My expectations were blown away when this year’s convention, (renamed to Fan Expo Dallas 2015) added the most impressive lineup of Godzilla related celebrities I’ve ever been blessed to see invade my home town with the lineup of Haruo Nakajima, Kenpachiro Satsuma, Tsutomu Kitagawa, and Shinji Nishikawa! • Hello longtime fan of Toho Kingdom, first time reader, or someone that is caught in-between. If you were lucky enough you probably noticed a K.W.C. Match on March 32nd that was a bit peculiar in nature. I would like to say it was an organized effort from the beginning but… it really was the combination of a series of random events, but before I go into those, let me first start off at the beginning of it all. • Located at 1800 Divisadero Street (San Francisco, CA 94115), a short drive away from San Francisco’s Japan Town, one can find “Godzila Sushi”. I had driven past the location many times, but despite the name I never gave it a second thought. Godzilla named foods are not all that uncommon, High Tech Burrito has their Godzilla burrito for example. Furthermore, sushi restaurants are a dime a dozen in San Francisco. It wasn’t until I actually walked past the location that I had to do a full stop to stare inside in wonder. Godzilla was everywhere inside, and the restaurant clearly didn’t just pick a random name, but was themed around the concept. (more…)

  • Some few months ago, again, I sat in the stupor that only comes from grading a pile of amateur prose, the old mix of well-intended vague platitudes to the likely lazy quick-crap-it-out blotches of half-digested text. Thus is the life of a writing teacher, and I do wish all my students success and intend to help them forward as they develop their own unique styles. But in the middle of the stack, tired of the stylistic snafus and about to suffer a comma-correcting coma, I wanted respite. I wanted to read something thoughtful, something funny, something with a crisp, fresh snap of writing panache. (more…)

  • The King of the Monsters goes post apocalyptic in this comic series from IDW Publishing. Helmed by the creative team of Cullen Bunn and Dave Watcher, the story focus on a world decimated in the aftermath of a series of kaiju attacks. The mini-series ran for five issues in 2014, from August 13th to December 17th. It features a variety of Toho monsters, from Biollante to Manda. (more…)

  • Over the years you’ve seen Godzilla suit actors Haruo Nakajima (Showa series), Ken Satsuma (Heisei series), and Tsutomu Kitagawa (Millennium series) numerous times inside the US. They have appeared together in the excellent documentary “Bringing Godzilla Down to Size” on the Rodan and War of the Gargantuas DVD. For the convention scene, the suit actors have done solo appearances, in pairs or, for the first time, all at once at the Chiller 2014 event. (more…)
