In a surprise announcement, a sequel to the mobile game Godzilla: Defense Force has been revealed. The original title, developed by NEXON, Neople, and Studio 42, launched in 2019 before reaching its end of service on February 26th, 2026. While many assumed Korean based NEXON was moving on from the property, the franchise has instead been handed to developer Mintrocket. Founded in 2022 as a NEXON subsidiary, Mintrocket is best known for Dave the Diver, which notably featured a Godzilla collaboration.

July 2nd, 2026 update

In our interview last month, Mintrocket shared a wealth of new details about the game. They also provided several additional screenshots as part of a press package. Since many of these images have yet to appear online, we’ve decided to showcase them below.

In addition, here is a roundup of what’s been revelated so far in chronological order. Ones with an asterisk are shown as summonable, either in combat or the icon on the card. In addition, noted when something has only been seen so far as a card. That doesn’t mean that it will only be a card in the final game, but there were several mechs that didn’t feature outside of their card role in the first game.

The announcement was accompanied by a trailer, embedded below.

The footage features returning original characters Operator Yui and General Tywin, seemingly confirming this is a direct sequel rather than a spiritual successor. Several kaiju can also be spotted, including Godzilla (1954), King Ghidorah (2001), Destoroyah Perfect Form (called “Complete Form” here still), Burning Godzilla (1995), Godzilla (2001), Ebirah (1966), Mothra (1966), Godzilla (1989), Godzilla (1966) and Godzilla (1973). Notably, Ebirah (1966) and Godzilla (1966) are shown being summoned by the player to battle enemy monsters. Cards also show Gabara, Mothra (2001), Biollante Flower Beast, Destoroyah Aggregate Form and the P-1 from Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965).

The basic structure of the game seems similar, with bases attacking the enemy and the player using cards to influence the battle. There does appear to be new techniques, showing the player assembling a shield and also helping Ebirah aim his attack. Allies are also shown in the video, although unlike in the first game these look to be original characters.

Mintrocket has also listed the game on their site, with the following description for it:

“Earth is under attack. It’s time to fight back! Build your base, recruit citizens, and lead the Earth Defense Force against an all-out monster invasion. From the 1954 original to Shin Godzilla, legendary monsters from 70 years of Godzilla history are closing in. Take them down, collect their cards, and unleash them in battle!”

Additional details were provided by Eurogamer, which reports that the project is a passion project for Mintrocket CEO Jaeho Hwang. That may not come as a surprise, as Hwang previously traveled to Japan to personally secure the licensing agreement that brought Godzilla to Dave the Diver.

Eurogamer also shared three additional screenshots, one of which confirms Anguirus (2004) as an enemy monster and King Ghidorah (2001) as a monster summoned by the player. Cards are also shown for the Oxygen Destroyer, Orga and Rodan 1993.

Godzilla: Defense Force X is currently planned for Android and iOS devices. No firm release date has been announced, with the trailer only listing a launch window of “Early 2027.”
