Godzilla.com has been through a number of transformations since it first came on the scene, originally as a device to promote GODZILLA (1998). This news article tracks some major updates that have occurred to the site since its resurrection and Toho took it over directly.
July 10th, 2023 update
Toho has gone through another revision of the Godzilla.com domain. While similar to before, the site has streamlined the overall structure and focus. Gone for example are the individual filmographies, now setup more as a list of all the films and where to stream them. The video section, fun stuff and event sections are also gone. In the case of the latter, though, they seem to be placed in the news section now, which for example has an article on Nijigen no Mori (ニジゲンノモリ –). The Monsterpedia has also been updated with a more graphical focus that features more images. As a funny side note, that includes a couple images taken from here on Toho Kingdom that still contain the site’s logo. Examples can be seen with both the Minilla and Gigan bios, with below being a screen grab with the Toho Kingdom logo highlighted:
That aside, probably the most exciting aspect for fans is that they have announced it will contain a new store as part of the revision. Right now this is just listed as “Coming Soon”, but word is that it will launch this summer.
May 17th, 2019 update
To promote their upcoming Godzilla titles, Atari took over the Godzilla.com domain. It was then used to highlight their games, such as Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed. However, as the promotion cycle on the titles ended, the site stretched on before eventually Atari’s rights lapsed. This resulted in the site being dormant for 10 years. However, Godzilla.com returns as it has been revived as an official hub for general Godzilla-centric information. The site currently has seven categories to browse:
- News – covers news in regards to the site and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
- About Godzilla – a basic introduction to Godzilla
- Filmography – spans the entire Godzilla filmography, with some covering monster and weapon appearances, and condensed staff credits
- Monsterpedia – biographies of Godzilla and his many foes
- Videos – currently only hosting two trailers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
- Products & Event – features some Godzilla merchandise by JAKKS Pacific
- Fun Stuff – includes wallpapers for computers, tablets, and mobile devices
According to Toho’s Chief Godzilla Officer (CGO) Keiji Ota in an exclusive article published on ComicBook, the site “will be continuously updated as a source of news for upcoming Godzilla films including movie trailers and key art, events, fan content, new product news, and all future announcements. […] We’re thrilled to unleash a world of content around our most beloved Godzilla.”
