Announced with a trailer back in December, Toho is making a film adaptation of the 2023 labyrinth-like game The Exit 8. The movie presently doesn’t have a release date, other than coming out in Japan sometime in 2025.

The science fiction project is being helmed by Genki Kawamura, who will take on writing, directing and producing duties on the film. Kawamura already has a fairly long history with Toho. This starts way back in 2005 with his producing credit for Train Man (2005). He would go on to produce a number of films for Toho, but also started to dabble in writing as well. This includes penning his 2012 novel If Cats Disappeared from the World, which Toho made into a movie in 2016. While predominantly involved in movies as a producer, working on recent productions like Monster (2023) and Belle (2021), he has directed before, including on A Hundred Flowers (2022).

The trailer for the upcoming film is included below.

As for any international releases, this month Deadline reported that the movie will be featured at the European Film Market (EFM), which takes place from February 13th to 19th this year. The EFM hosts a range of events, and the film, now referred to simply as Exit 8 rather than The Exit 8 like the game, is likely seeking a distributor for markets outside of Japan.

About The Exit 8 Game

The Exit 8 is a “walking simulator” game developed and published by KOTAKE CREATE. It centers around a player navigating a Japanese metro station passageway trying to reach the exit, which is exit 8. This involves spotting anomalies and turning back whenever one appears, otherwise the player will have to repeat everything all over again.

The game was released on Steam on November 29th, 2023. It was given console releases shortly after, starting with the Nintendo Switch on April 17th, 2024, then PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on August 8th, 2024, and finally the Xbox Series X/S on January 8, 2025.
