The Return of Godzilla, the opening film to the Heisei series of Godzilla films, is a great 80s period piece, with a tone much like that of Virus (1980) or The Last War (1961). In 1984, the world at large believed a nuclear war was coming as demonstrated with such movies as The Day After and Threads. The Return of Godzilla reflects this perfectly, and the film is largely enjoyable, if you get past a few issues. Of all the films in the nearly-60 year old Godzilla franchise, Godzilla vs. Megalon is one of the most infamous. Criticized as being one of the worst and ruining the Big G’s reputation, I’d call it an enormously guilty pleasure. Being a huge fan of Henshin Heroes such as Ultraman and Kamen Rider, I find the concept of Godzilla working with a superhero to be utterly delightful. Nevertheless, I AM analyzing this film on a critical basis. (more…)
