Fans of Toho have a great reason to return to theaters this spring, as Alamo Drafthouse has announced a new monthly screening series celebrating the studio’s films. Named after the studio’s famous aspect ratio, which debuted for Big Hit Three Color Girls (1957) although is probably best remembered today for appearing on the science fiction production The Mysterians (1957) that year, the program is being called TohoScope.
Launching in April, the series will initially spotlight films from the Godzilla series. While the name might suggest a focus on the Showa era, when the TohoScope aspect ratio was most widely used, one of the early selections comes from the Heisei Godzilla series which indicates there’s no strict limitation on which films may be featured.
The program also goes beyond simply screening classic movies. Each event includes themed add-ons tied to the featured film, along with a special menu offering items such as “Godzilla Punch,” “Blue Fire” cocktails, Monster Fries and Boneless King Wings.

The Alamo Drafthouse’s TohoScope kicks off with Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) in April, the final entry of the Showa Godzilla series. Fans attending the event will also be able to pick up themed merchandise, including a newly designed Mechagodzilla T-shirt and a collectible Godzilla popcorn bucket. The celebration doesn’t stop there as May will feature Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) with an exclusive Hedorah pint glass. Meanwhile June will be focused on Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) which will be paired with a Biollante enamel pin set. July’s screening remains a mystery for now, though it will include a pre-sale for a new Mechagodzilla-themed popcorn bucket.
