Gaseous transformation

Gaseous transformation

The human vapor was able to change to a gaseous state at will. In this state Mizuno could move between tight areas, such as between bars in a jail cell.

During the transformation, clothes and other items would be left behind.

Vapor asphyxiation

Vapor asphyxiation

In his gaseous state, the human vapor could asphyxiate victims.

This involved the Vapor Man converging on the neck and mouth area, choking their prey as a result by depriving them oxygen.

Background and Trivia
  • Portrayed by actor Yoshio Tsuchiya. Although the height of the character isn't listed in most publications, the actor himself was 1.7 meters tall and is a likely height for the creature.
  • In the Toho Special Effects: All Kaiju Illustrated Encyclopedia the creature is given the name of "Vapor Man Mizuno" (ガス人間 水野 - Gasu Ningen Mizuno).
  • The 2005 publication Godzilla: Toho Giant Monster Picture Encyclopedia (ISBN: 4092800525) lists an English name of "Vapor Man" for the character. The spelling is also the American version of vapor without the "u", versus the British/Canadian version that is used in the movie's international title: The Human Vapour. In addition, the book uses a shorter Japanese name for the creature of just ガス人間, dropping the "Mizuno" part.
  • Actor Shoichi Hirose stood in for Yoshio Tsuchiya in certain special effects scenes. This fact is found in the 1997 publication Age of the Gods (self-published).
  • The character was considered for the aborted Frankenstein vs. the Human Vapour project.
