Description

According to legend, the vampire's identity lies in a lone survivor of a shipwreck, who washed upon Japan's shores in the late 1700's. The man was a foreigner and a devote Christian, a religion that was banned countrywide by the shogunate. Due to his forbidden faith, the man was badly tortured, causing him to betray his religion and spit at the cross. Yet his actions did little to deter his continued prosecution. Seeking refuge, the foreigner fled to the desert-like wilderness. While there, in a twisted and desperate state, the man ended up drinking his own blood to survive. He eventually became accustomed to its taste, and returned to the town area to quench his new found thirst. The first person he ran into was a 15 year old farm girl, who he killed, while drawing blood from her. Remorseful for what he had become, the man clutched the dead girl and cried, as he carried her back to the wilderness with him. Then, by some unknown miracle, the girl was revived. The news spread across the local countryside, causing the villagers to rally and kill the two out of fear. The townsmen then locked their bodies away in a large, stout coffin and buried it.

Decades dragged on, as the coffin was brought to the surface once more. However, the tomb's inhabitants were not dead, and instead rose from their grave to the open air again. The once human beings had now been changed into vampires, and took out their desire for vengeance on the nearby inhabitants. Eventually, the two, now in love, happened upon the local Seimei School for girls. The twisted beings took over the institute's higher ups, quenching their desire for blood on the principal and his wife. They then removed their faces, killing them in the process, and took on their appearances to blend in.

Vampire (2nd Generation)Years passed, as the pair took to choosing their successors, before killing them to take on their appearance. All the while, the vampires sated their appetite for blood by feasting on the school's students, in secret, year after year. The plan seemed fool proof, until one of the chosen successors managed to escape. Although he fled with his life, the man bore a large scar on his neck where they attempted to remove his face. Fortunately for the pair, the man lost the ability to speak from the attack. He was eventually deemed crazy by his peers and locked away, allowing the vampires' practice to continue.

Eventually, Shiraki, an out of town psychology professor, transfers to the school and is elected to be the next principal. Shiraki becomes suspicion, though, when the night he stays at the principal's house he swears he sees the Madam and Keiko, one of the school's missing students. However, he is quickly knocked out; causing him to think it was only a dream. Unfortunately for the vampire's plan, Shiraki befriends three of the school's students who the pair had their eyes on: Kumi, Kyoko and Yukkio. Kyoko is the first to fall victim, as she finds the vampire's trademark white rose while wandering into Keiko's old room. Shortly afterwards, the vampire strike her in the breast with his fangs. The next day, in Shiraki's class, the girl screams and faints with no visible illness. Shiraki and the doctor spot a pair of teeth marks, though, and the psychology professor begins to doubt if it was a dream after all.

Worried about the girl's safety, they post watch at the school that night. It doesn't take long for the vampire to appear once more, this time striking Yukiko in the chest with his fingernail. Before he can feast, though, the doctor, Shiraki, and the school's guard burst into the room. The vampire quickly turns and runs through the nearby window, trying to conceal his identity. However, the doctor and the school's guard give chase. In the mean time, Kyoko, under the vampire's control, attacks Shiraki. After a failed attempt, she then commits suicide by leaping from the top floor. This gives Yukkio, also under the vampire's control, the opportunity to leap from the window to join her new master in the woods. The two meet, as the doctor, alone, comes across them. He snaps several photos of them, but is discovered and strangled to death for interfering.

The police are then called to investigate the break in, as Yukiko is found and returned to the girl's room. Shiraki accuses the principal, but Yoshii, one of the Madam's controlled subjects, testifies that he was with him the entire night. The police accept the report, and drop the accusation.

The Madam then picks her successor, and tries to weave her own trap for Shiraki, but fails. The failed attempt leads the psychology professor to the principal's house to locate Kumi, as both the vampire and his wife attack them. After a long battle, Shiraki thrusts a hot poker through the vampire's heart. In a state of impending death, the vampire struggles to move over to his bride, who is dying as well. The vampire rests his hand comfortingly on top of her own as an everlasting death overtakes them both.

Powers / Weapons
Immortality Unless Heart is Punctured

Immortality Unless Heart is Punctured

Notoriously hard to kill, the vampire took an axe to the chest, feeling pain from the strike and being stopped momentarily. Moments later, though, they removed the sharp weapon and threw it back, appearing to be in perfect condition.

It took a hot power being driven through their chest, hammered in with a wooden stool, before he was finally killed.

Can control Those He Draws Blood From

Can control Those He Draws Blood From

After he draws blood from his victim, the vampire is able to control them. This power works both for those that have their blood drank and also those who suffer puncture wounds from his sharp fingernails. The vampire's control is almost immediate after this point, while the victim grows increasingly sickly looking in appearance as time goes on.

The ability was used to control both Kyoko and Yukiko after each is attacked. Oddly, even though Kumi has her blood drank twice, this power is never used to control her.

Hypnotic Gaze

Hypnotic Gaze

The vampire can hypnotize people simply by staring into their eyes. This power did not appear to allow him to command his victims, but was used to paralyze them in place.

This power was first used against Kyoko, her face conveying concern while she was powerless to move as the vampire fed on her.

Casts No Reflection

Casts No Reflection

Although he was photographed by the doctor, who was killed moments later, the vampire leaves no reflection.

Can Take Other's Appearances by Rubbing Their Flesh Into His Own

Can Take other's Appearances by Rubbing Their Flesh Into His Own

Through slicing off someone's face and rubbing it into his own, the vampire could take on the appearance of others.

This ability is never seen in the film, although a failed attempt, from someone who escaped, is seen. They sport a large scar on their neck from the unsuccessful attempt.

Going by the events in the movie, the vampire had stolen the appearance of at least three people over the years.

Background and Trivia
  • Portrayed by actor Shin Kishida. During the doctor's shipwreck story in the 1700's, the character is portrayed by Roger Green.
  • It's mentioned in the film that the vampires were not seen during the daytime. While it's likely exposure to sunlight was a weakness, as it is in most vampire tales, it's never specifically stated. In fact, the principal first meets Shiraki during the day, although from the confines of his home.
  • The vampire is seen owning an English book on King Edwards in his house.
  • Although they are both portrayed by the same actor, Shin Kishida, this vampire does not share continuity with the one that appeared in Lake of Dracula (1971).

Description

As legend foretold, the Madam started her life as an ordinary farm girl living in Japan's countryside. However, she was given an unnatural life when a foreigner, desperate and partially mad, broke in and feasted on her blood. This assault ended up killing the girl when she was only fifteen. The man quickly became remorseful for his actions and brought the dead girl with him to the wilderness. There, by some unseen force, the girl was revived. Word spread of her miraculous recovery and the villagers, out of fear, quickly killed them both. Afterwards, the corpses were locked away in a huge stout coffin that was buried in the cemetery.

Many years later, the coffin sifted its way to the surface, where its inhabitants, in an undead state, emerged once more. However, the beings were no longer human, as they had become vampires. Craving revenge for their death decades ago, the two sought to enact their fury on the local residents. Their new unnatural lives did more than resurrect them, though, as they also found love in each other's company as well. With their new found comradeship, the two devised a plan to continue feasting on the local town's people without arising suspicion. As the first part of their plan, they arrived at the nearby Seimei School for girls and killed the institute's principal and his wife. As the second part of their plan, the two fiends then removed their victim's faces. They then used the flesh to take on their appearances, and then resided over the school. In their new found role, the Madam and her husband proceeded to slowly feast on the school's students. Killing one or two each year, the faculty began to note how some of the girls disappeared, but never discovered the truth. For decades their plan worked. Not to arouse suspension, as their immortal bodies did not age, the pair picked successors. Once someone was selected to replace their position, they would be killed. In the process, they would take their appearance as to mask their own abnormally long life.

MadamThe plan was thrown into jeopardy, though, when Shiraki, a psychology professor, was picked to take the position. The twisted fiends' preparations were in motion before Shiraki was even told of the news. In fact, they had already killed the principal's wife in a car accident, or so it appeared. In truth, the Madam was lying dormant in the principal's cellar, waiting for her husband to take on the visage of a new principal.

After being told of the promotion, Shiraki spent the night at the principal's house. However, the psychology professor heard an odd singing noise that caused him to explore the residence. He happened upon Keiko, a missing student at the school that the Madam had been feeding on. Interrupted, the Madam attacked Shiraki, causing him to flee. Keiko, under the vampire's control, trapped the professor, as the young man was then knocked out. Shiraki was then returned to his bed, and awoke only to assume that it must have been a dream. To make sure, he ventured down to the cellar and opened the Madam's coffin to find her motionless body inside.

Later, Shiraki befriended three of the Seimei School's students: Kumi, Yukkio and Kyoko. Students that the Madam and her husband had been eyeing during their stay at the facility. One of the three, Yukiko, is picked by the Madam, in secret, as her successor. However, trouble arises while her husband goes to the school to draw her blood. He is successful, but in doing so the police are called to investigate the incident. Shiraki accuses the principal, but one of the Madam's servants, Yoshii the school's French literature teacher, acts as an alibi. The French teacher states that the principal had been with him the entire night. The authorities see no reason to doubt the claim, and drop the accusation.

With the police gone, the Madam draws Yukiko toward her, while Yoshii is sent to take care of Kumi, the only surviving student left to protect her. Yoshii is successful, while Yukiko wanders down to the cellar. Once there, the Madam draws her blood before preparing her for the ritual. With Yukiko sprawled across a table, the fiend reveals a large dagger. The blade is then used to slash the girl's head, slowly removing her entire face. A raven, one of the Madam's familiar, then flew down to aids its master in removing the flesh from the now dead girl. With the skin in hand, the dark fiend applied it to her face and slowly took on the visage of the young girl. With her appearance changed, the Madam then enacted the second part of her plan and returned to Yukiko's room. Once there, she tried to trick Kumi into believing that she is her friend, but the Madam's ploy failed. Undeterred, the dark fiend instead attacked the student, biting her in the breast as she is sent to the principal's cellar.

Shiraki, having visited one of the principal's failed successors who retained the scare from the attempted face removal, arrives to check on Kumi. However, he only finds the Madam disguised as Yukiko in her place. Enacting the next part of her plan, the female vampire took Shiraki to a nearby lake and asked him to marry her. The young man is wise to the couple's game by now though, as tells her that he has already figured out that she isn't Yukiko. The Madam's trusted servant, Yoshii, then emerges. Feeling confident that Shiraki's fate is sealed, the Madam then tell of the lake's history. How in its depths are countless people who have fallen victim to the two vampires. A secret they intend to keep, as Yoshii assaults Shiraki while the Madam departs. The French literature teacher's attack is unsuccessful, though, as Shiraki knocks him into the water.

The psychology professor then rushes to the principal's house and ventures down into the cellar looking for Kumi. He finds the young student in the Madam's coffin, but while trying to rescue her the female vampire springs out and attacks the man with her dagger. The Madam's assault is fended off, while Kumi runs away only to meet the husband. Shiraki rushes after her, and assaults the principal in an attempt to save her. The Madam then refocuses her efforts, and attacks the young girl instead. The attempt fails though when Shiraki strikes down the vampire by plunging a hot poker through his heart. This action seals both the Madam and her husband in an eternal death.

Powers / Weapons
Immortality Unless Heart is Punctured

Immortality Unless Heart is Punctured

After being mysteriouly brought back to life, the Madam was granted immortality as long as her heart was intact. This allowed her to live for centuries.

Can control Those She or Her Husband Draw Blood From

Can control Those She or Her Husband Draw Blood From

Once she draws blood from a victim, they are under the Madam's control. This ability was used over Keiko and Yoshii. Furthermore, this power also extends to those her husband has drawn blood from. Yukiko, for example, is controlled by the Madam even though the pair had not met yet.

The Madam also has control over a crow that is kept in the cellar. It's not clear if she drew blood from it, or controlled it in some other way. The bird would assist the Madam, though, in removing the face from her victims.

Hypnotic Gaze From Those She Controls

Hypnotic Gaze From Those She Controls

While her husband hypnotized his victims directly, the Madam was able to extend this ability through the people she controlled.

Yoshii, when he was sent to fetch Yukiko, demonstrated this ability in order to put Kumi in a trance as to allow her friend to leave unfollowed.

Can Take Other's Appearances by Rubbing Their Flesh Into His Own

Can Take other's Appearances by Rubbing Their Flesh Into HEr Own

After cleaving off someone's face and rubbing it into her own, the Madam could take on the appearance of others.

This ability had been used several times in the past, and was used in the film on Yukiko. After the young girl is summoned to the cellar, the Madam places her naked body on the table. A dagger is then used to slice off her face, cutting clear into the skull. The flesh is then applied to the Madam's face until her appearance changes to match that of her victim.

Weaknesses
Immortality Unless Heart is Punctured

Linked to Her Husband

The Madam has a bond with her husband. While this grants her some of his powers, such as her ability to control those he has drawn blood from, it also presents a large weakness.

When her husband is struck with an axe to the chest, the Madam jerks in pain. Later, when her husband is killed by a hot poker through the chest, the Madam dies as well.

Background and Trivia
  • Portrayed by actress Mika Katsuragi and then Mio Ohta after taking Yukiko's appearance.
  • It's likely that the Madam, like her husband, also casts no reflection. However, this power is never demonstrated or noted.
  • Both of the vampires in Evil of Dracula (1974) feast on their victims by biting them in the breast. The one exception might be Yoshii, as the film hints that the Madam is about to bite him in the neck, although the lights go out before anything is seen.
