Description

Hikaru's trusty vessel, the Mighty Liner is a combat vehicle created with Peacelandian technology. To not give away that the Sakimori family were actually aliens, the vehicle was able to transform and appear as a normal Earth car. This allowed the vehicle to remain nearby at virtually all times, incognito. When needed to battle the Garoga aliens, though, it could transform into a versatile vehicle capable of flight, underwater travel and inter-dimensional dogfights.

The Mighty Liner's transformation could occur in stages as well. This included a wingless version, with a fork lever on the control panel bringing out the wings. It could also change from its car disguise to a fully deployed version. In addition, it could also change in conjunction with the Zone warriors. This enabled Zone Fighter, Zone Angel and Zone Junior to enter the normal looking car and then have everything, themselves and the Mighty Liner, transform in an instant.

Quick transformations and its ability to be nearby were key to the war against the Garoga. The craft itself was outfitted with a variety of weapons for this task. In addition it could also travel at high speed, with indications that the Mighty Liner was superior to Astro Dash teleportation for the rapid transit of long distances. The craft, while not as durable as Smokey, survived several Garoga Car and Garoga Fighter hits or near-misses. It was also able to survive a fall off a cliff, although did receive substantial damage from this.

Control wise, the craft featured a variety of options. While traditional control panels were found inside, the craft could also be commanded through voice controls. This enabled it to be summoned via orders feed into the Zobot. It also featured auto-navigation, which allowed it to auto-pilot itself whenever Zone Fighter would transform into his giant form and leave the craft unattended. Unfortunately, and unlike most telepathic Peacelandian technology, Mighty Liner could also be operated by non-powered individuals. It simply requires ordinary car keys, while all transformation and flight functions can be operated through the control panels, which created a liability for misuse of the craft by the Garoga.

Powers / Weapons
Flight

Flight

By entering flight mode, the craft was able to travel in the air.

In flight mode, the wings deploy and the wheels recess into sealed chambers on the body.

Space Travel

Space Travel

The craft's flight mode was not limited to traveling within earth's atmosphere. In fact, the Mighty Liner was able to travel in space, as the Mighty Liner made at least part of the interstellar journey to Balgar.

This mode can also transition to underwater travel, or pass through an existing dimensional gate or portal and fly through fourth-dimensional space.

Transformation

Transformation

The Mighty Liner could change its appearance in an instant. The limits of the ability are unknown, but probably restrictive as it was only seen changing into the same model car.

While disguised, the Mighty Liner was not as resistant as normal. For example, the tires could be shot out. That said, the vehicle was still more durable than a normal car as it was bulletproof and shown driving over an exploding land mine.

Proton Beam Cannon

Proton Beam Cannon

A blue beam fired from the front grille, this attack appears to be the Proton Beam, more powerful than the human-sized Zone siblings' version, but less so than giant-sized Zone Fighter's Meteor Proton Beam.

It is capable of destroying a Garoga Car outright, with a powerful explosion.

Laser Cannon

Laser Cannon

In addition to the Proton Beam cannon, a giant, multi-function laser cannon was equipped on the roof of the Mighty Liner.

This could fire two different types of beams. One was more defensive in nature: a blue, static-filled ray that was used against incoming Garoga missiles. The other was offensive: a jagged red Dyna-beam that was an anti-Terror-Beast weapon.

Missile Launcher

Missile Launcher

A wide weapons bank on a single central spar could deploy underneath the Mighty Liner. This was capable of appearing, disappearing or switching to the Y-shaped weapon configuration in the blink of an eye.

This launcher could could fire missiles that could destroy a Garoga Car in a single shot, even when impacting the ground a good 10-20 feet away and only catching the target in the periphery of the blast. It could also destroy a Garoga fighter-craft in a single shot, or even a pair of them in close formation with an impact on one of them. These missiles proved ineffective, though, against the Terror-Beasts.

Super Missile Launcher

Super Missile Launcher

This pair of rapid-fire weapons could deploy underneath the Mighty Liner. They were capable of appearing almost instantly.

The missile-projectiles here were used primarily against Terror-Beasts, with moderate effectiveness.

Nullifying Gas

Nullifying Gas

In response to the Terror-Beast Bakugon, an anti-hallucinogenic gas dispenser was installed in Mighty Liner's roof ornament. This was released from the same area that the laser cannon was housed.

Meteor Clone Camouflage

Meteor Clone Camouflage

Illusionary duplicates of the craft could appear, acting as decoys.

This power did not appear to come directly from the Mighty Liner on its own, but rather required Zone Fighter.

Background and Trivia
  • The Mighty Liner appears as a 1973 Nissan Skyline 2-door HT "2000GT" in its disguised form.
  • Several toys of the Mighty Liner were released while the show was being aired. Many of these feature full color artwork of the vehicle in action. One such toy from Aoshima shows the Mighty Liner firing off a red missile from the front of the vehicle, where the Proton Beam is fired. While it's possible this was an early concept of the weapons for the craft, as there is a missile-like red object sticking out from the front, it could have just been a creative interpretation.
  • In the show the disguised car features a license plate of "品川55 22-21". The 品川 notes it's from the Shinagawa municipality in Tokyo. The 55 is the vehicle class code, noting it's a passenger car with an engine that is between 600cc (cubic centimeter) and 2000cc. The last part, the "22-21", is the actual license plate number assigned to the car.
  • The interior controls, particularly the communications panel, inside the Mighty Liner changed over the course of the Zone Fighter series. They first received a major upgrade in episode 11 of the show. Another minor cosmetic adjustment happened in episode 21.
  • While the blue beam fired from Mighty Liner's front grille is assumed to be the Proton Beam, it is never identified as such onscreen. However, the third verse of the theme song's lyrics do indicate that Mighty Liner possesses this weapon.
  • It is likely that Mighty Liner's interstellar range is limited, as the Pandora Capsule is treated as the only vessel capable of transporting the Sakimori family back to Peaceland.
  • While no explanation is given as to how Mighty Liner survived being blown up in episode 21, it is possible that this was another use of Meteor Clone Camouflage and only an illusory duplicate was destroyed.
  • Hikaru can transform into a giant sized Zone Fighter from within Mighty Liner's driver seat; presumably, he jettisons out the same hatch that he used to deploy into space while doing so, and Mighty Liner lands nearby on auto-navigation.
