As Japan was an island nation, the country needed
to protect its waterways to ensure that goods,
materials and fuel continued to flow into the
country and power its mighty economy. Due to their
alliance with the United States, the Japanese could
get access to some of the finest in military hardware.
Among the military equipment the Japanese military
bought over the years, the list included the SH-60J
Seahawk helicopter. Equipped with sonar buoys and
capable of carrying torpedoes as well, the SH-60J
Seahawk helicopters fulfilled the requirements
of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
When Godzilla made his return appearance in 1984,
the SH-60J Seahawk helicopter joined in the search
alongside the HSS-2Bs and the P-3 Orion Maritime
Patrol planes as they searched for the nuclear
leviathan. They had little luck, though, as
Godzilla managed to slip by the Japanese Self-Defense
Forces to attack the Ihama Nuclear Plant.
Later on in the crisis, three
Seahawk Helicopters flew over the waters of Tokyo
Bay with their sonar buoys deployed as they attempted
to find the King of the Monsters. In fact, they
did find him as Godzilla rose unexpectedly in front
of one of them and let out an enormous roar before
he began his march on Tokyo.
