Forged by the ever growing military might of
the Japanese Self-Defense Force, the F86F Saber
Jet was a veteran of the all-too-frequent monster
attacks of the mid 20th century, dating all the
way back to the first Godzilla incident. Though
a chariot of war known for only a few minor successes
in battle, the Saber Jet stood as a testament
to the bravery of those who piloted these craft,
and was often the first and only line of aerial
defense in the continuous struggle against paranormal
forces. As Godzilla left a path of death and destruction
in his wake in 1954, the Saber Jets managed to
slightly bombard the beast with missiles before
the enormous animal disappeared into the deep.
One year following the creature's defeat at the
hands of the massively powerful oxygen destroyer,
another member of Godzilla's species suddenly
appeared. Battling with the equally dangerous
Anguirus in Osaka, the Saber Jets were launched
yet again to halt their reign of destruction,
to no avail.
Time progressed, and yet another monster of the
atomic age reared its terrifying face. Rodan,
an ancient species of mammoth pterodactylid, was
discovered near Mt. Aso in Japan. The Saber Jets
were sent in pursuit of Rodan, but no headway
was made. The creature seemed unstoppable, and
the vessels became the latest victims of the winged
reptile, resulting in many unforeseen deaths.
The craft, though consistently a failure in the
face of all-out catastrophe, were summoned yet
again when a race of aliens dubbed the Mysterians
arrived on Earth. Desperate to rid the world of
these duplicitous invaders, the Self-Defense Force
launched into battle ground and air-based weaponry
of numerous varieties, including the Saber Jet.
Once again, its contribution to the war effort
could be judged as minimal at best, though luckily,
the brutal carnage of the Mysterians was finally
put to a stop when the alien race was defeated
and banished into the perpetual void of space.
Varan, a towering triphibian monster, appeared
in Japan the following year. The Saber Jets were
once again called in, but were proven useless.
Varan was ultimately killed, but the Saber Jets
had little effect on the result of yet another
major battle.
The 1960s rolled around, and the Saber Jet was
still in commission. The sudden reemergence of
the belligerent Mu Empire heralded the return
of the aircraft, but they were quickly forced
into retreat. Luckily, the aerial battleship Gotengo
defeated the enemy, and peace returned to Japan.
But a greater horror soon struck. In 1964, Godzilla
returned in full force seething with an extreme
fury. The military sent wave after wave of counteroffensive
procedures to take care of the nuclear leviathan,
including the Saber Jet, but they were ultimately
forced to bid a hasty retreat. It was Mothra who
would eventually defeat this enemy.
Finally, that very same year, the Saber Jets
were responsible for a true victory over an invading
monster. Dogora, a carbon-absorbing anomaly from
space, appeared on Earth, threatening coalmines,
diamond reserves, and potentially human lives.
When it was discovered that wasp venom crystallized
Dogora's body, artificial supplies were mass-produced
and deployed by Spray Tanks and Saber Jets. Dogora's
protoplasmic flesh came in contact with the chemical,
its body gradually became stone like, and the
monster's reign of horror became a distant memory.
This moment of glory for the Saber Jets was relatively
brief however; for in the year 1972, the aliens
from Nebula Space Hunter M utilized King Ghidorah
and Gigan in their bid to conquer the world. The
Saber Jets were sent into battle, but their efforts
proved futile against the demonic space duo. The
invading monsters were finally repelled by the
combined might of Godzilla and Anguirus, once
sworn enemies, now inseparable allies. In the
year 1973, the Saber Jets were put to use perhaps
for their final time against an invading monster,
when the Seatopian behemoth Megalon made its debut.
The giant roach overtook everything that stood
in its way. The jets were, once again, no match...
but Megalon and its ally Gigan were dealt a heavy
loss at the hands of Godzilla and his robotic
sidekick Jet Jaguar.
No matter what the danger, the Self-Defense Force
lost brave soldiers in their bid to defeat great
monsters and sinister aliens in the 1950's, 1960's,
and 1970's. Though a war machine known for only
a few victories, those who fought these valiant
battles will be remembered for their undying heroism
in combat and their selfless sacrifice.
