Comments

The worst Simitar Toho DVD is, without a doubt, Terror of Mechagodzilla. Unlike the others in the series this one lacks a 2.35:1 aspect ratio presentation of the film. Secondly this is the US "video edit" of the film, that has been available in the US for some time, which cuts four minutes of footage. Although I don't think the chances of the infamous extended Katsura operation scene ever being shown in the US are even remote, not that we are missing much however. Video here is not bad, scratches are not all that frequent. However the color is washed in the film as it appears more yellow than it should. Artifacting is present on this disc, like all those in the Simitar series, but is not as bad as seen in the Godzilla Versus Mothra release. Audio here is surprisingly good considering they changed it from its original mono presentation to stereo. The "Surround Sound" version is pretty "ho-hum," but still a nice extra even if the stereo presentation on the disc is superior. Extras and menus seen on the disc are pretty standard for the all Simitar discs. The usual trailers for the other Simitar DVD releases are present here, so is the artist gallery, and quiz based on the film. If you already have a Godzilla DVD from Simitar, than chances are you will skip over most of this except maybe the quiz. Not a great DVD by any means; however, it is the best DVD for Terror of Mechagodzilla available in region 1. So for the moment it still has a place in many fan's collections.

This disc is also featured in the DVD box set, Godzilla.
