Criterion's presentation of the final chapter in Hiroshi Inagaki's extraordinary Samurai Trilogy. The overall video presentation is better than the previous two discs in the trilogy from Criterion. Scratches range from numerous to very few through out the video. The color is once again washed, and appears slightly more yellow than it should. Fortunately the color is not washed to the same degree seen in Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto and Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple. Artifacting is once again noticeable, but seems to have improved over the previous discs in the trilogy. Audio is fairly good here, better than the previous two DVDs. It does dip in quality here and there, but is not very noticeable unless one is actually searching for flaws in the track. The lone extra on this disc is the original Japanese theatrical trailer to Samurai 3: Duel at Ganryu Island, which is in superb condition, better than the actual film in fact. Bottom line is that this is the best region 1 DVD for the Samurai trilogy, even though it is still not quite up to Criterion's standards.

This disc is also featured in the DVD box set: The Samurai Trilogy.
