Honestly, my first reaction to this DVD was that someone
actually set out to make a DVD on par with the horrendous
Alpha Video release of Godzilla
vs. Megalon, but missed their mark and wound
up with something slightly better, which in this case
is still saying nothing good about this release. Unit
World Movie Inc is at it again with their second region
free DVD for the Lone Wolf and Cub series. It's painfully
obvious that very little work actually went into this
disc. The best example of this actually occurs before
the movie even starts, as the main menu is a freeze
frame from the Sword
of Vengeance DVD main menu. However, to add
insult to injury, the main menu is "changed"
so that the Sword of Vengeance title is blacked
out, but it's still very obvious that it's there.
Video:
The video quality suffers the same fate as the previous
disc: the brightness is turned so far down that its
impossible to tell what's happening in night scenes,
artifacting is horrible (and is much more obvious as
more of this movie takes place in the day) as the film
appears grainy and the subtitles (which aren't removable)
are blury along with the picture. The composition here
is turned way down, making the colors in the film look
far from vibrant; furthermore, scratches are numerous
during many scenes in the film.
Audio:
There is, however, one aspect of this disc that places
it above its predecessor, the audio here is noticeably
better as it doesn't pop at all. There is still a small
distortion when the audio reaches a certain level, but
this rarely happens through the course of the film.
Extras:
This disc, like most legal region 0 DVDs, has no extras
to speak of. Although, it should be mentioned that the
scenes in the scene selection are devoid of titles and
there are only five of them this time around.
Overview:
Bottom line, this DVD really should never have been
made, and at any price it isn't worth a purchase. Stick
to the far superior Region 1 DVD.
