Tokyo Shock, over night, has become one of the companies,
along side Pioneer with their Onmyoji
DVD, which I would most like to see more Toho DVDs from.
The effort put forth on Pyrokinesis here surprised
me, I was fully expecting a mediocre DVD since it wasn't
being sold in any stores around here (most of them didn't
even have it in their catalogue). What I got, however,
was one of the best Region 1 Toho DVDs on the market.
Video quality is superb here: artifacting is all but
unnoticeable, the print used here has no color wash
at all and is completely devoid of scratches. Unlike
other transfers of the film, most notably those released
in Hong Kong, the brightness in the DVD is just at the
right level. The audio here is flawless, with no pops
in the audio track, and is presented in its original
Stereo format. The extras on this disc are what really
shine. The DVD comes packed with numerous trailers,
a total of six just for Pyrokinesis and two Karaoke
versions. The DVD also has trailers for Samurai Fiction
and Pistol Opera along with previews of Tokyo
Shocks DVDs for Versus and Kunoichi Lady Ninja.
Along with the healthy supply of trailers is a lengthy
interview with director Shusuke Kaneko, of Gamera
3: Incomplete Struggle (1999) fame, and a segment
on how the special effect scenes in the movie were created.
The interview with Shusuke Kaneko should be interesting
to any Toho enthusiast as Kaneko goes over Godzilla
quite a bit in it. The last extra is audio commentary
from the film's director, three Assistant directors,
and the person in charge of the Pyrokinesis web site:
who offer interesting insight through out the course
of the movie. This segment is spoken in Japanese, and
has English subtitles at the top of the screen to display
what the commentators are saying. Bottom line, anyone
with a interest in Toho films outside of Kaiju should
check this DVD out, they won't be disappointed.
