This page features the archived log of reports given while Godzilla: Save the Earth had its initial release pending.

A large thanks goes out to Atari/New Media Strategies for the following screen shots from Godzilla: Save the Earth:

September 20th, 2004
Over the weekend, Kirby Fong, producer of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and the upcoming Godzilla: Save the Earth, left Atari, and with it the Godzilla franchise. His departure marks the end of five years of work with Atari/Infogrames and four years of working on the Godzilla license. Fong went to great lengths to ensure that the Godzilla games actually saw the light of day, including a struggle with the President of Atari/Infogrames' after he canned the Godzilla idea six times. It's hardly even debatable that the recent Godzilla licensed games in America would never have been released if it wasn't for Fong's work at Atari. Beyond his contributions inside the video game industry, Fong also took time out of his schedule to answer questions the Kingdom had concerning the two Godzilla titles over the years, and for this we thank him.

Fong's experience in the industry was not confined to Godzilla, or even Atari, and has other entries in his portfolio of work, including producing the 1996 game Mortal Kombat Trilogy (Nintendo 64/Sega Saturn) and being part of the Sega Sports Team for such titles as NBA 2K (Dreamcast) and NFL 2K (Dreamcast), and the Kingdom wishes him the best of luck in whatever projects might await him in the future.

A shot of the game's box is now making the rounds on the internet, including sites which are open for pre-orders on the game. Below is a shot of the Playstation 2 version of the box art (click for larger image):

The game's producer, Kirby Fong, was kind enough to give us a quick answer regarding the fate of Biollante in Godzilla: Save the Earth, to put the matter to rest.

Question: Following the recent rumors regarding the Biollante character being removed from the game, would it be possible at this time to confirm or deny that this character has been cut?

"Just to put an end to any rumors...Biollante has been removed."

A couple of rumors have surfaced, so take them for what they are, which reveal several features from the upcoming Godzilla: Save the Earth which wont make the cut for the release in late 2004.

Reportedly, the single player mode has been changed drastically returning to the more traditional method of advancing found in Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee where levels are a series of matches, which will now feature a couple "mission based" levels scattered between the normal matches, instead of a mode comprised solely of them. This mode is opened to all monsters, though. The previously reported Godzilla underwater level and the M.O.G.U.E.R.A. asteroid level will still be in the game, but will be the only levels like them. Originally there was to be an entire series of levels with objectives like these, planned for Godzilla only, but this has been cut.

Also the "upgrade token" system, that would have allowed players to upgrade their kaiju's attributes, has also been removed from the game.

Gamespot had an early E3, the actual event will start May 11th, pre-showing of the new Godzilla game: Godzilla: Save the Earth. Gamesport revealed several new facts about the game, including a new set-up with the beams where they can lock (like during the final battle of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II [1993])and will only be broken after a series of "Rock/Paper/Scissors" style games, with each type being asigned to a button on the controller.

Gamespot went over the added "Action mode" in Godzilla: Save the Earth, and described three levels featured in this mode. The first was one where Godzilla had to pick up spheres dropped by Mecha-King Ghidorah, before they explode, and toss them in the ocean to defuse them. However, the spheres being tossed into the ocean awakes Destoroyah, from the bottom of the ocean, which Godzilla will have to defeat. The second was where M.O.G.U.E.R.A. flew from behind the moon to Earth, blasting objects on his way in a similar fashion to a rail shooter. The third was a level which had Godzilla move from Tokyo to San Francisco, as the kaiju traveled underwater.

Gamespot also mentions a new "upgrade token" system, which players can unlock by fulfilling every objective in a "Action mode" stage, that will allow players to upgrade their kaiju's attributes, which can be used in online battles.

Atari announced new details on what was called, up to that point, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee 2 under the game's actual title: Godzilla: Save the Earth. The consoles the game will launch on are indeed the Sony Playstation 2 and Microsoft Xbox, as reported earlier. The game will feature online play for up to four people, and early character names dropped for the sequel include: Godzilla 2000, Godzilla 90's, King Ghidorah, Gigan, Mothra, SpaceGodzilla and Biollante. A grand total number of over 18 is given as well. The game will have nine different modes to play in, including:. Action, a "mission-based" single player mode; Challenges, a series of challenges for the player to complete; Custom, allows players to toggle options for the match; Versus, traditional one-on-one melee battles, and some mini games, such as "rail-type" game.

The story is as follows: the scientists of G-Force have succeeded in being able to duplicate Godzilla's genetic code, and to create a power substance called "Godzilla-Matter," which is nearly indestructible. However, the Vortaak discover this break through, and strike Monster Island in hopes of stealing these G-Cells for themselves. Once again, the Vortaak seize control of the Earth monsters to follow through with their plans. As Godzilla, the player will attempt to defeat the Vortaak, rescue the other monsters, and recover the stolen G-Cells.

Areas announced for the game include: Tokyo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Osaka and New York; furthermore, each is reported to have more diverse terrain, including hills and oceans.

More news as it becomes available.

The sequel will, according to Atari at their financial reporting event, make a showing at this year's E3 in May (the 11th through the 14th). The consoles which the game will launch on, appears to be, the Sony Playstation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. The Playstation 2 debate for the series is none to surprising, and was hinted at even before the first was ported to the Xbox. However, the Xbox appearance is a little puzzling, given the performance of the first on that system. Which sold below Atari's expectations, and, also, appears to continue to sell below the "inferior" Gamecube version. This would lead one to think that their motive was possibly based on content to be used through Microsoft's Xbox Live Service.
